Hello all - I recently picked up a 2016 VR6 treg with low miles for a good price. I noticed shortly after buying it that the electric radiator fan would occasionally turn on after shutting the ignition off, at full speed, for long stretches of time. Took it to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a faulty fan (was showing open circuit in the computer). After replacing the fan, the issue quickly came back. The dealer then said that the battery was toast and was showing error codes on all the control units in the vehicle (I call BS as my OBDeleven reader was not showing those errors), which they said was the cause of the fan still running, so had the battery replaced. The issue continues.

I'm about at my wits' end spending huge sums of money at the dealership having them play trial and error with my money. I'm considering wiring up a relay to the fan so that it's only connected and able to turn on when the ignition wire is live. Before i do this, has anyone else had this issue? I've read that it could be one or both of the water temp sensors, however those appear to be reading nominally.

Note: i have the upgraded towing fan, which i believe is the 850watt fan, as opposed to the non-towing fan which is like 650watts (if my memory serves me right)

Huge thanks!

My TDI Jetta fan stayed on if it was a hot day and when the engine cooled down it shutdown. Is it hot in your location right now?

Mine will literally run until the battery is entirely discharged (hours). It did it in the summer when it was 80° and now when it’s 20°F

Hmmm, I wonder if there is a temperature switch that has failed closed in the on position and needs to be replaced. That's where I would start to look for the problem.

Being that it's a 2016 wouldn't it still be covered under warranty?
+2 on the coolant sensor being suspect. As stated use a reputable diagnostic program like VCDS where you can look for faults and most importantly monitor live data.
