2016 Touareg Radio troubles

Radio fades out (usually to silence) frequently during which time there an intermittent, jarring 'thump-thump' sound coming from the speakers (as if there were a electrical surge). One:has anyone had this kind of experience? Two:where in the car is the radio unit located? Thanks.
