2016 Touareg glass cleaner?

Just bought a 2016 VR6 Lux and in low light the windshield glass has a very fine mist-like coating that diffuses light and hinders visibility. (Think lacquer mist). I carefully applied WD40 on a small area with no positive result. Tried turpentine. Nope. No other signs of this on paint or other glass areas, although I removed a few globs of pine pitch here and there. Suggestions? Thanks.

Inside or outside of the windshield?

For outdoor - wash with a high quality auto wash like meguiars. Then Clay bar it. Then wash it with meguiars. Make sure it's clean - then apply rain-x to the entire windshield

If it's interior, use running alcohol on a towel (do not doro onto the vinyl) and clean the heck out of it with hard scrubbing

If it's on the outside and it covering the glass you could use soapy water and 0000 steel wool, or a softer compound wool if you like. I've cleaned the outside of the windows on mine with it. Didn't scratch the glass and cleaned any residue off.

Update: The only thing that has worked is acetone...I believe that when I had a minor rear panel scrape repaired and painted the windshield did not get covered. Being very careful, and covering the hood and avoiding rubber and plastic, I was able to clear off a small circle with a cotton cloth and a LOT of effort. Looks like a lot more of the same. Read lots of comments--thanks to all--and a few online searches that said acetone could damage the glass. I would think the safety glass laminate would not be on the outside, btw. Anyone think clay bar would be faster or more effective?

I suggested Clay bar in post 7.
