I have broken the screen on the main MFD and the dealer tells me that the whole unit must be replaced. The unit still operates except for the those involved in touch options. Is this correct? Can the the screen be replaced? Thank you.

if you can somehow take it apart and find a part number for the screen and touch sensor.. you may be able to find a replacement.

But in reality, you are going to have to replace the whole unit. They are assembled in china and sold as a complete unit

Had a bit of a look at wreckers and will continue. Insurance a good idea but still $750 excess and impact on no claim bonus. Mfd still clear for reversing camera which is all I really need it for so might have to put up with it unless I can get lucky with a totalled car, or someone runs into me and damages the mfd in the future.

Who is it on here who has just totalled their two-week old Touareg . . . ?

Yea thats a good idea, whoever has theirs getting totaled, i read about it other day, maybe you can swap with him if he still has the car in his possession. I know i would without a problem if that was me.

Why would you not just get a new assembly from VW themselves rather than trying to find one from the wreckers that may not be the right version.

Get it done right by VW.

BTW, I am afraid to ask what the cost would be to do the above.

Be afraid nm2003. The dealer was quoting over $1000 for part. I don't think installation but u make a good point especially since I'm in Melbourne Australia and the totalled car is in U.S. And I know zip about getting unit in and out. Car still drives awesome and reverse camera good as gold. Maybe good as reminder for me to take care of valuable things. I'll keep looking maybe for local part. Is it the same one in other VWs? Which alpine model are u referring to coldogg?

Where abouts in Melbourne? There are a few VW specialists with access to VAG-COM equipment that may be able to source you a replacement OEM unit at a cheaper price.

If you are in the south-east, "Auto Union" in Oakleigh are worth trying.

On a separate note, keep these guys in mind for servicing your Touareg after the warranty period. I have been servicing previously owned VW and Audi's for the past 10 years without any problems.

Sorry, couldn't recall who and where the new Touareg had been written off.

But as you are in Oz and they are US, a swap would have been impossible anyway as their navigation screen would not only have had you driving upside down but on the wrong side of the road as well!

Thanks nm. Really appreciate that. That's pretty close. I'm down on the peninsula and contact them Monday. Much appreciations. Yeah nooby, that may presented some difficulties but maybe taken me to some interesting places.
