Well that sucks! Maybe drill a hole in the engine cover. Oh well, I have learned to live with out a dip stick on my 2011 135i.
I did too but 3 weeks ago my oil sensor took a dump and showed that I was 1qt low then an overfill. The good thing is I bought a dipstick to verify my oil level (which was/is right on), the bad thing is the oil sensor is on back order  The oil level reading is a crucial piece of info and should not be trusted to some dinky sensor that can go kaput at any time, IMHO.

I decided to order a dipstick for my 2012 last week while in for my 1 year service. It cost $ 20 and change and arrived in a day.

I don't know what all the fuss is about installing it. You simply open the hood ..or bonnet, for you tooby....pull on the little nipple at the top of the long tube angled up from center to right side at the front of the engine...then insert the stick. For those without imagination, that would be as one faced the engine compartment from the front of the vehicle.

So.
I will say that I feel much better having that mechanical connection to the lifeblood measurement of my engine.
For what it's worth, my dash reading is full and my dipstick reads full at the top of the cross hatching. Just thought I'd record this for any folks that are confused by all of the misinformation posted here.

I just pulled of my engine cover off and found the ds tube and plug. I think I will order a ds.
Unless VW changed the engine cover on the 2013 TDI, there is no need to pull anything on the 2012. It is exposed for easy checking once the stick is installed.

I was motivated to to order mine since the oil was changed for the first time by the dealer and I wanted to make sure that the oil was actually filled.

My electronic dipstick has never shown any deviation from totally full in 9,000 miles so I was beginning to think it was not functional. At least with the dipstick I know where it is at.

I assume you mean that you ordered it from the local dealer?
