I need to fill my transmission back up after hitting a peice of steel on the highway. Put a hole in my trans oil cooler. VW wants 80 dollars a litre for ATF. Is there an alternative that will work the same or is it risky using aftermarket ATF with these tregs?

Thanks

Specific Toyota fluid required - do a search for proven brands

I'm not an engine expert... But what I know about cars and their make-up is you need to replace the ATF with exactly the same ingredients at what VW requires. So, look at the chemical make up and see if you can find that at a European auto parts store or any store that has that chemical make-up and us that instead if it is cheaper. I usually check Amazon first and then go from there.

75w90 outta do it. Shifts might be a tad delayed, though.

I presume the car has a 6 or 8 speed Aisin automatic transmission. I think that 75W/90 is for the Diffs not the transmission. The transmission needs a VW spec compliant ATF which will also be a Toyota WS spec compliant ATF. Most Most manufacturers of Modern low viscosity ATF 6 flluids meet these specs

How about some clarity on the story?
What was replaced (if anything), or patched up, or whatever?
The OP is mentioning sufficient fluid for a full initial fill, or a full flush...... if only the oil cooler was replaced, and cost is the ultimate motivator, he should only need a few liters to "top it up". If he's doing a pan drop and filter change on top of it, he will only need ~9L..... if he's only doing a drain and refill, only ~6L.... if he's only topping up a low level, even less......

Details matter!

I replaced the tranny oil cooler because the old one was destroyed after hitting a chunk of metal on the highway in heavy rain. lost probably 2 litres. I figured I might as well just service the tranny at the same time because I am at 200k and I have no idea if this car has ever had it serviced

I just changed mine couple of weeks ago with Idemitsu TLS LV. On the spec sheet is has one of the lowest pour points / 6900 cP at -40C I could find and a flash point of 170 C. Alot of toyotas and Lexus use it, specifically for WS rating.
2x 5 quart bottles I picked up for about $90 all in
Cheap. Does it list the VAG spec? What's your impression of it thus far?

DEXRON VI is a specification. Most dex 6 trans oils are pretty vague on specs especially viscosity when cold. 08c transmissions need LV so anything under 10,000 cP at -40c is good. Most Dexron 6 fluid specs that I could find are anywhere between 10,000 and 15,000 cP. Too thick.
For comparison the Idemitsu TLS LV i run is 6,900 cP at -40c.

@Dannyboy485
You still happy with the Idemitsu TLS-LV ?
I'm over the 200k (km) mark now so I should probably get around to changing my OEM fill this summer.
TBH I've only put 1k on my treg this year as I'm dealing with life crap at the moment and haven't had the time to finish it off right now. However from the small amount of driving I've done it's completely fine. Smooth and consistent.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's close to or even OEM fluid from the factory.
From the PDS I gathered the -40c performance is 6,900 cP which is one of the lowest viscosities available (at reasonable cost) so cold preformace is much better. 40c and 100c are very similar across the board between oils
It carries the WS requirement and is more or less designed for toyota/Lexus/Aisin
