2013 Touareg Changes: Officially, Officially, Official

It's hilarious how long the non-event announcement of changes "officially" takes place. Dealers and bloggers adamant about "NO CHANGES AT ALL" for 2013, but there are several minor ones.

I'll take a bump in horsepower any day. I'm also sure a few folks will be swapping out some tail lights.

Well, here's the deal if you haven't seen it in bits and pieces already.

Touareg
For 2013, the Touareg incorporates only minor changes over the 2012 models.

-Touareg TDI Clean Diesel models get a power hike, from 225 horsepower to 240.

-18-inch “Karakum” wheels are available on VR6 and TDI Sport trims.

-Executive and Hybrid trims get Vavona wood interior trim.

-Hybrid models receive LED taillights and rear license-plate light.

Don't all Touaregs have a light for the rear license plate?

Uggh I seriously hate the Vavona wood trim I hope its not take it or leave it in the Exec and Hybrid models (sounds like it is) so I will have to go for a Lux even though I prefer the Exec's wheels to the Lux's. It looks like wood from some wild African safari (more suitable to a Lexus or Infiniti - I guess BMW and Audi have been using Vavona wood trim but not Mercedes). The worst part is that VW doesn't usually give you many options. It's often take it or leave it. Maybe it will grow on me after I see it in person or some pictures. Not happy about the trim though. :?

Interesting to put LED tail lights on only the hybrid. If this is your flagship the least you could do is put decent speakers an amp in it. Having said that I am otherwise happy with our hybrid and need to make an appointment with the stereo shop soon...

My theory is that they are trying to avoid cannibalization of sales from cayenne and q7 lines-- as long as you need to go there for certain options it protects the premium value of those marques. This is true in the US where VW is not seen as being able to command those high margin prices. In the ROW however VW and esp Touareg are a premium products so no value confusion... Lots of ways to load up on options.

This, and keeping prices down, are the only way I can rationalize VWoA avoiding what would otherwise be extremely profitable options lists for the T3.

Could be true. American Auto makers make equally dumb decisions. You can but a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with a diesel in most of the world except for the US. I guess they're not interested in sales to those who want better fuel milage and have no desire for a Hybrid 4wd. You can retro fit the 2.0 liter VW diesel in one, but it gets kind of expensive.

Agreed. Doesn't make financial sense though I do wish we could custom order those features.

2013 Execline gets a backup camera
My 2012 TDI Sport w/Nav has the backup camera. They told me at the dealership that the late 2012 models started getting cameras with the Navigation. They said that the early once didn't because of the tsunami in Japan and there was no supply.

2013 Changes - TDI

One of the biggest changes is the engine in the 2013 has an increase to 240 horsepower AND has shed 55lbs. Thus, MPG is better. I have a 2013 TDI Lux and I am on my first tank and I have 365 miles on the tank and it's above half full. The computers is saying I am getting 32mpg and I have been driving 30% highway and 70% in town (not bumper to bumper city traffic). I am very optimistic on the MPG, hope it continues.

I just did a compare on the VW Canada site. It shows the hp difference but no weight difference.

Where was 55lbs lost?

i called up VW Canada and they don't know if the Execline will have it or not. They havent received any deliveries or actual information from Europe of the Execline only the Highline. If your regional rep mentioned this i think he might only be assuming. The information should arrive in about two weeks time. The person i spoke said he would be really surprised if the execline wont come with sport suspension as for production its easier to leave it on. I'm crossing my fingers for it as this might push me towards an ML 350 BT....
