2013 TDI Exec w/Rear Air Suspension

I love my TREG but I want to be able to occasionally tow my 7000lb (loaded) enclosed car trailer with it. With a tongue weight of ~700-800lbs there is just too much sag in the rear suspension.

Please chip in if you have any experience or specific knowledge, but here's what I want to do.... and here's my offer. If you help me think this through, I'll be guinea pig and if it works, quite frankly I think there can be a lot of interest.

1) I want to buy some remanufactured REAR air suspension struts for the 2011-13 Touareg. (Several on Ebay.)

2) Instead of all the complex OEM electronics, etc, I want to hook these up to a wireless Air Lift 72000 system. For those not familiar - here is the kit.
Air Lift 72000 Remote Wireless Air Compressor System

I currently use this same Air Lift 72000 on my F150 and it works flawlessly. I can choose any air pressure - even a different air pressure left and right (if I wanted to) and the system maintains that precise air pressure until you change it.

The more I think about it, the more I think this will work. I have a couple of questions for those in the know:

1) What is the approximate min and max air pressures in the OEM system?

2) Looking at pics of the OEM air shocks, I want to make sure that I can somehow adapt the air-input fitting to something "normal". In the pics, they have a ~6" pigtail air line but does anybody know what type of connector they use? I just don't want it to be some odd-ball VW-only thing. If I can connect into it, then I think my idea will work.

Comments welcome....

Interesting...
Unfortunately while I don't have any advice, I will be following this thread with interest and hoping you to give it a try. I have been tossing up on the bilstein shocks for some time to increase the ground clearance and have been looking for air bags for the rear (which don't seem to exist) for ages. Your initial thoughts certainly seem like they could work.

If you give it a go, please report back.

Cheers

patto,

Our experience seems to be the same. I think the engine and drivetrain are plenty capable for towing but I don't like the sagging and virtually no suspension travel as with that kind of load, the suspension is nearly on the bumpstops, I'm fortunate enough to have a 4-post lift at home and I have studied the rear suspension geometry.... and I see why it is hard to adapt an air suspension system to it. The only alternative seems to be to replace the struts themselves with air struts and for this, OEM is the only game in town.

I'll let you know if/when I pull the trigger!

Have you looked at Arnott Industries air suspension units?

You can do a custom airbag over strut like mine has. They might be able to adapt it to factory struts instead of coilovers like mine. Although not sure how the ride will be mixing air and steel spring suspensions.

I did what you are describing with my 08 Hummer H2 that I used for a lot of towing. I bought the factory air bags then used a Viair compressor. I has some solenoids and pressure sensors from another project and made a controller that is very similar to the system you posted except I used my phone as the remote.
Overall I was happy with the set up.

Attached find the VW self study program book on the chassis that has a lot of suspension information that may help you understand how the VW Touareg Air Suspension works and how the damper in the air shock works in the OEM system.

It looks like you will have to reverse engineer the voltage to drive the damper at to get a given damper current and then have to determine the current that works best for you, if it is set fixed and does not vary for conditions like the OEM system does.

Plan B might be to find a used Touareg with Air Suspension and sell your current Touareg, you might end up spending same $$$ and better results and much time saved.
