Recently took my Touareg on a 250-300mi road trip - prior to it, had an oil change and basic service (110k scheduled maintenance). At the start of the trip, I got the "add up to 1.5qt of oil, OK to drive" notification. I added the oil, levels were perfect, went on a trip and everything was fine. On the way back, I stopped to gas up and get back on the road, not even a quarter-mile, and the car starts misfiring, sputtering, and check engine light turned on...stopped at the side of the road and it wouldn't restart at first, but eventually did. Oil notice came on with absolutely no oil shown on the gauge - I made it back to the gas station who had the right oil type by the quart, bought 5qt, and started adding slight amounts at the time - the gauge updated accurately and I probably added 4qt of oil. The engine started after some effort but sounded terrible.
I had the car towed to the VW dealership and they looked at it shortly and said one cylinder had zero compression - all error codes (16 in total) were engine misfirings but nothing more. Technician failed to offer any other insights though they did not see an oil leak at all and the oil I added is still in there at the same level. I'm completely baffled by this but their recommendation is a complete engine replacement (cheaper, they say, than a rebuild).
My KBB/Edmunds value is around $10K (if running), salvage seems to be $5k. VW wants $11K-$12K to replace the engine (independent shops, surprisingly, want even more) and give me a 12mo warranty on the repair. I need a car for 2-3yrs more before getting my new one, but now I'm not sure if it's better to repair (likely cheaper than replacement but risky?) or get rid of it and get something to hold me over...
Any thoughts/insights/advice will be greatly appreciated!
