3.6 blocks are everywhere now that the Atlas is out. I say look for a salvaged 3.6 and get it fixed. Can likely be done for $5K and would last you another 3 years for sure

Paying up to $10K to fix a car that will be only worth $10K leaves you with $0.

Selling for salvage leaves you with $5K.
agreed, in the event he is unable to get it done for ~5K. I got a 2015 GTI DSG replacement done for $2500 all-in, including salvage DSG w/ 11K miles, OEM transmission install kit (gaskets, hardware etc), DSG flush, and all of the work done by a dealer at a dealer rate.

if they can source a 3.6 block for like 2K I think they could get it installed for another 2-3K at a VW dealer. Then they could drive the car another 3+ years, amortizing those costs.

It is a lot of effort with some uncertainty about how reliable the car will be after the work, though.

provabky best to walk away.

I don't know if this is an Atlanta/Georgia issue, a pandemic issue, or something else but I've spoken to various VW dealers in the area and numerous repair shops and NO ONE is that cheap on labor, and even my own searches haven't turned up a replacement engine under $4K. Granted, I've never done this before and maybe looking at all the wrong places and talking to all the wrong people...but so far at least, no one is under a five figures price point for a repair/replacement.
then junk it and get another rcar
