To start, I love this VW! Had many Audi"s, BMW's, Rovers and my first VW was a 66" Westy Pop Top Microbus with a 59' Porsche engine, a 1600 Super, that I drove to California with in 1980', the last VW I owned was a 2004 W8 Sedan. I've had this for 2 months now, bought it with 77k and now showing 82k. The engine light came on and then the add BLUE warning that it woludn't start in 200 miles unless I topped it off, which I did to no avail. I have also been noticing a slight smell of exhaust in the cabin when first starting the vehicle in the cold mornings. A quick OBD scan revealed a code for insufficient flow rate of add Blue, and a NOX sensor fault. Off to the dealer to test my new VW EXTENDED EMISSIONS WARRANTY! Cut to the chase... After experiencing a less than fuzzy feeling at the first 2 dealers I contacted, by the 3rd phone call, I was confident with the level of service I expected to get and was treated well on the phone. I brought the car in that day at 1:30 pm less than 2 hours after first contact. I received a loaner, a 2019 Passat, and was on my way back home in an hour or so. They called the next day and informed me of the following.
Replaced the NOX sensor, all codes cleared.
Noticed a slight oil leak dripping above the Turbo, unspecified yet as to the source.
After the 2nd day and several suggestions by me the Exhaust leak is confirmed by the shop foreman and turns out to be the Turbo Waste gate. New Turbo Covered!
The oil leak is described as coming from the Engine Crankcase Vent Valve Assembly or Oil Separator, or in the Good Old Days, the PCV Valve! Not Covered!
I look up the OEM VW part #05A103495 and the MSRP is $224.45 for a cheap plastic housing with a few hose fittings to suck in the exhaust vapor, separate the oil and breath off oil free air, into the Emissions Re-circulation system. Key Word...EMISSIONS! Isnt this super duper Extended Emissions warranty supposed to be all encompassing to Emissions related parts? Apparently not. And the estimate I received of $2343.87 to replace this PCV Valve assembly is PREPOSTEROUS, to use a word I rarely use! $1690.00 for 13 hours of labor and $605.43 for parts! Not the $224 I could buy it for at the dealers own parts counter! Needless to say I rattled off a wordy reply to the dealers Service manager balanced with appreciation for the things that are covered and sheer wonder at the cost of the one thing not covered?
Waiting now for the reply.........to be continued......
