Hello. Our 2012 Touareg Executive V6, 167,000 miles, has a significant oil burn rate. I’ve tracked the rate since 90,000 miles, and over the last 10,000 miles it burns about 1 quart per 550 miles. The valve cover (with PCV valve contained I assume) was replaced about 20,000 miles and two years ago. Trying a BG oil flush now, feels like that is likely snake oil. Everything else on the vehicle operates perfectly, and it has been meticulously maintained, all records kept. So-any other thoughts on the cause of the oil burn? Our goal is to keep it going for another 1.5 years. Again, all other systems perfect, fresh Michelin tires and brakes, no warning lights, never an accident, etc. A curious side note_when you remove the oil fill cap, it is difficult to open at first, like there is a negative (I think) pressure there. After taking it off, it is easy to put on and take off. Also there is black soot on the rear window and taillights, which makes me think it is burning, not leaking oil. If it is piston rings—-that spend may be too high. Thank you in advance!!!!!

VW says that using 1 either liter or quart, I don't remember which it was, every 1K miles is normal. No one aside from them thinks this is normal.
My '11 uses ~1 quart every 3kK miles and has since I bought it with 77K on it, I'm now at ~113K. I get the oil/filter changed every 5K miles and use LiquiMoly correct spec. for my VW oil. New valve cover with the RKX PCV diaphragm fitted installed and it didn't make a difference.
There's a few threads on it here. Apparently it's not just VW.

If it is burning - that's your piston rings (there is no other place it can burn). So you have 3 options: leave it as is, replace rings/pistons (engine rebuild) or try "snake oil" to clean deposits on rings.
As for additives I noticed several approaches and you can try one or combination of those:
  • Oil additive before change (like Liqui Moly Engine Flush) - run it in engine 15-20 mins before oil change
  • Flushing oil like BG - run special oil to clean the system, put normal oil afterwards
  • Piston soak - pour cleaning additive (B-12, Seafoam, etc.) through spark plug hole into the cylinder, leave it there for up to 24 hrs, let it sip through rings into oil pan, change oil afterwards
Also as far as I understand not all oils created equally (even if they all meet VW 502 00 spec), some may have more detergent components to keep engine cleaner from carbon build up.
here are few interesting videos for reference

I could be mistaken but I recall reading that bad valve seals can cause oil consumption as well.

It looks like I fixed my oil consumption. Last oil change I did piston soak with B-12 Chemtool, used 2 cans. Before I was going from full oil to warning light coming up in about 1000 miles, so I had to top up 3-4 times between oil changes. Since piston soak and last change I am 4300 miles in and oil level dropped by just 2 marks. Also I believe it helped to improve blow by and crank ventilation. Before I had some oil traces in intake pipe after PCV (despite PCV being totally fine). Last time I removed upper intake manifold and intake pipe was completely clean and dry

I so want to do this on mine. Even though I only use ~1.5qt./5k miles, I would love to see if it reduces the oil consumption even more.
