hi All
My 2012 (7P) Touareg is having timing chain rattle at start up. It has been there for the last 2 years and now lasting for a longer period. Few times, I have noticed it lasting for 2-3 minutes and the goes away. I have decided not to wait any longer (and get in to a bigger trouble) and decided to replace the timing chains as a DIY. I have seen in YouTube someone doing to without dropping the engine. That video, the guy only had the transmission out. What I am not entirely sure about is whether it was a Touareg or an Audi Q3, 5 or 7.
So the question to the wider audience is:
1. Can the Touareg transmission be removed without dropping the engine?
2. If yes, will there be enough space to work?
3. Has anyone done it by removing the transmission?
4. Has anyone got a diagram showing 3.0TDI CRCA (or a similar) engine timing marks?
5. I am in the process of ordering chains, guides, tensioner, crank oil seal and transmission side oil seal. Are there anything else that I should be looking at ordering.

All the YouTube videos I have seen (except for one), the whole engine is out and I understand it is lot easier to do it. In my circumstances, I don't have a hoist so dropping the engine+transmission together is not an option.
Thanks for any help and guidance.

If it's the video done by that Finnish mechanic, I recall that it was an A7. I'm pretty certain that it won't be too many years before I am doing the same. So far, I cannot help on this job, but when scoping things out on my last oil change, I saw no reason why the transmission couldn't be removed with the engine in the car. There seems to be more room in the back of the engine than on my Duramax.

Keep us posted if there are significant differences from what's out there on the YouTube Audi

Looking at his YouTube comments, the Finn (Andres Leever)
replies to several of the comments. He notes that the engine in fact has to come out to do the timing chains on a Touareg, but the transmission and transfer case stay in. There is also a note in the comments that there are no timing marks, just inset the locking pins and everything should be properly timed.

Hey, did you end up going ahead with this? I was reading through the workshop manual over the weekend as I plan on doing the same. And yes, the Aisin 0C8 transmission behind the CRCA engine can come out by itself, leading me to believe it's entirely possible to do timing chains with engine in the car.

What does the service manual say?
step one
remove engine and transmission
step two
separate

obviously there are always workarounds people who get paid flat rate will figure out, but it seems like thered be dozens of "while youre in there" parts that would likely be much easier/only accesible if they whole thing is sitting removed in front of you.
