I have 2011 Touareg Exec. (No trailer hitch) and I would like to know my options on installing one. I was not able to find OEM 2011 for sale, and my local dealers are not helpful at all (understatement).

Questions:
1. Would a hitch from previous years fit 2011?
2. What are aftermarket options for class III hitch?

If you installed one and wrote about it, link will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time

I hope so too. I'm in the same boat.

I guess that I don't understand how something like this can be available off the line, but not available as a kit? They obviously have the parts, NO? Find a box, put the thing in there, and make up an instruction sheet.

It just can't be that difficult...

I bought a factory Westfalia one with my '010. It came with everything necessary for wiring up except the adaptor plug (and the wiring for a brake controller...we went wireless).

Wonder why they stopped offering them? I doubt the T2s would work on the T3s.

trailer hitch wiring module HELP!!!??

I just bought a trailer hitch for my 08 v8 and wanted to get around the dealer fees by doing it myself. $760 without labor for OEM hitch was just too much for me. i recently bought the OEM wiring harness from the dealer and while i was there i found out that it requires a module for the system to work. they said that the lights are computer controlled and that too much amperage might burn the computer or just display a check light message and none of the lights would work.

anyone know anything about this?
will it work without the module?
if not where can i buy one off a junker or somewhere cheep dealer wants $418.95!!!!!!!!!

part # for module 7L0 907 383 N (or L depending on yr)

Here is the dealer with much better prices. I just bought OEM roof bars from them, paid $16 for shipping. Also, it's the same dealer who contacted VW regarding tow hitch kit, and told me they are going to be available in September.

BTW ECSTuning wanted $405 for the same roof bars.

Before buying I'd triple check...the T3 has a wider track and new platform. I would be skeptical that a factory hitch for a T2 (that replaces the old bumper mount and integrates structurally) would fit...even an inch off will reck your day.

I specifically asked the guy, and he said the fit is perfect. New Touareg is bigger, but i guess they share bumper reinforcement.

Who he? The guy trying to sell you something?

Mine replaced the bumper assembly entirely. It fit into the existing structural pieces. Again since the T3 is wider and a whole new platform I remain skeptical. If this bolts on to your bumper pieces (like from U Haul) than your towing capacity will be deminished.

Good luck with everything, sorry for being negtive, id just hate to see you have a towing problem.

I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear. "he" is the guy who posted on Russian forum, and he is not selling anything to anyone.
I am well aware about diminished towing capacity of aftermarket hitches. What I am trying to find out is if OEM fow hitch kit from previous Touareg will fit on 2011. As of right now, VW of America do not sell tow hitch for 2011, and if everything (including wiring) fits, I don't see any reason to wait for VWofA to get their **** together.

Oh...

In the words of the infamous Rosanne Rosanna Danna, "never mind"

I really appreciate all of the feedback.
Sorry for sounding a little rough

Like you mentioned, the whole bumper reinforcement needs to be replaced, and most of the aftermarket Class III hitches offer full replacement but only rated at 6000lb. Others are sandwiched between body and bumper reinforcement, and offer even lower towing capacity.
So if aftermarket hitch fits, OEM should also fit, right?
I think the only way to find out for sure is to get actual measurements from the hitch for Touareg 1/2 and Touareg 3.

Thank you,
Rome

I just purchased my 2011 and noticed during the negotiating phase that it had no hitch. Dealer said he would get on order and get it installed (VW not aftermarket). I knew before he even looked he would not find a hitch in stock and that there were no aftermarket. Sure enough, Had to come from Germany and that it would take until December to get. He ended up stealing it off of a V6 gasser Touareg on the showroom floor. He said I had the most expensive hitch in the history of hitches. Said it was going to set him back 2000 dollars all said and done to swap out the hitch and get the thing installed and replace the hitch on the gasser.

Thank you guys for this thread you just save me a ton of time and headache !! I am trying to find a 2011 Sport with Tow hitch factory installed. Local dealer had the exact color and style I wanted in stock but no trailer hitch. They told me they would overnight it in and install it no charge, looks like that would not have been the story once they tried.
Going to look around for one in stock with tow kit installed.

Also does anybody happen to know what type of electronics are included with the kit?
Thanks again !

I can't say for certain but most that i have seen on lots in my area don't have the seven pin connector installed, just the hitch. I am almost certain that the wiring to the hitch is there you just have to purchase a seven pin connector and install it. It should have wiring all the way down to the bumper just to the left of the receiver behind a plate with four screws. Others have said that you can purchase one at a hitch shop or RV shop and it plugs/wires right in. Remove 4 screws and a plate and install and rescrew it in. You don't need to buy a VW seven pin adapter for over $100.00. I also believe that the dealer has to do some programing for USA lighting configurations instead of European configurations that may be factory default.

I haven't seen any action on this thread in 3 weeks so i guess I'll chime in. When I purchased my T3 Exec I really wanted the Back-Up Camera because of the whole Tsunami/Earthquake thing in Japan and you all know the deal with that so the 3 VW dealer's that were searching for me only found one without a Hitch but it was wired for it so I went for it in an effort to retro-fit post purchase but have run into the same problem and I too have been researching.

http://www.oemvwaccessories.com/pos/volkswagen-touareg-978/2011/50/ shows a Hitch with all of the hardware in a thumbnail on their site for the 2011 but after calling the guy I spoke to (Denny, very nice and informative) called his VW parts contact and they told him, NO, the 2010 doesn't fit! He was able to get part numbers for the new Hitch but wouldn't share them with me. He did take my number and did some research and called me back but needs to further confirm and due his due diligence before confirming and sharing the part numbers. My guy at VW (local) told me that if he had part numbers he could see what he could do about getting the Hitch. If that happens, I'll share here as well. Meanwhile, he stated that he'd get his webmaster to remove that hitch offer from their site so you may not see it there depending on how long it takes them. Part of my deal with VW when I negotiated with them for my T3 was a $500 discount off their OEM Hitch when it came available so I'd wind up paying the difference for the install which isn't bad in my opinion. Good luck to all interested and if you know more please share.

Thanks!!!

I'm still looking for one for my 2011 as well. I found this site several ofn months ago, and noticed that they had one, and thought that I was in the chips. I started getting cold feet, because they were mysteriously the only place that had one. I checked with them, and sure enough, it didn't fit.

So, I pointed this out to them several months ago, and it's still on there. It will be interesting to see if it gets removed.

I'm just glad that I didn't order one from them...

Yeah... with the amount of research I've done I'd be super leery myself but if I know of something solid you can bet I'll post it on here.

Rome - I just called and spoke to Paul at the VW Dealer you posted about 3 weeks ago and the date has now moved out to sometime in October. I'm with CADman! What's the deal? They obviously have them on the line.... why can't they just box up a couple and send them our way? So I guess if someone gets rear-ended and bangs up their hitch beyond all recognition you have to wait until sometime in October to get it fixed! It's NOT right I tell you!!!!

The very first time I inquired about it, I was told June. This date has been moving since then :(

Nice... I saw the write up in VWVortex and Facebook. Let's see what comes of this? As for the date, I'm sure the Supply right now is strictly for the Demand of T3's coming off the line. It would be nice to know who actually manufactures the Hitch for VW and just go to them.

I still don't understand, though, how they CANNOT make a couple extra to sell out to the general public.

It just can't be that hard.

It is manufactured by westfalia, and I tried contacting them, but they never replied.

I originally put off buying the T3 because of the lack of a full size spare wheel, Then found a local 4x4 shop who made a spare wheel carrier that attached to the mounting plate of the " non-detachable" tow bars. As a favour the dealer then sent a T3 to his local towbar specialist with a sample of the T2 fixed towbar and we were told that it would actually fit.
I did not take it any further at the time but now having just bought a 3 month old demo V6 TDi with air and terrain tech will look again. Car has the OEM fold-away hitch but elsewhere on this forum one of the Australian members show where he made up an adaptor that allowed the spare wheel carrier AND you could still tow. Given time I will see what we can put together on the T3 as it would be good to carry either the spare or two jerry cans on one of these foldaways while pulling our Oryx off road trailer/caravan,

If you think finding a hitch is frustrating better hope you never have an accident or something that requires other parts. My guess is those may be pretty hard to get also. I saw this problem head on and did not purchase until they put the hitch on the vehicle from another Treg on the lot. Sure enough their VW parts reps said December to get one from the mother country.

Hmm, that's interesting. I bought a 2012 T3 TDI without a hitch two weeks ago, and negotiated the addition of the hitch in the deal. The dealer called late last week and said the "part" was in, and I have an appointment tomorrow to have it installed.

If VW isn't shipping the factory hitches, I'm wondering what my dealer is going to be installing tomorrow. I think I'll give them a call this afternoon and double check. Maybe they just pulled it off another on the lot?

What a coincidence! So as an update to my research, I too have found the correct Hitch and the part # is 7P0-803-881D. This is for the 2011 and up T3's. I must have called 20 different VW Dealers and all but one knew what the right number was. The others were going into the system and finding a different part # 7L0-092-155A was the Hitch and it wouldn't be available until late September early October and I wasn't buying it. Then I found out that that is for the "Detachable" Hitch sold in Europe and not the US.

SO mjfrank, check with your dealer to make sure that the Hitch you're getting is part number "7P0-803-881D" and not the later!

Kudos to you on your negotiation of the Hitch as part of the deal. That Hitch goes for $1102.50 and labor alone is $440.00.... yikes!

Anyway, I called my dealer, gave them the miracle number and presto, it showed up on their screen. They were amazed and the entire time they were bent on the fact that they were giving me the right information. Never believe what they tell you. Investigate yourself, do your homework and be persistent with them.

So mine is on order too and should be installed next week. Finally!!!!

WOW, the actual part number, I need to call my dealer :)

Go for it!!! Let us know what you find out?

VW South Africa today confirmed that the fixed hitch for the T1/T2 would fit the T3 and in fact the same part number was used for both vehicles. I think the 7LO....155A is the same number I have but it's at the office and will confirm tomorrow if different. Price quoted was only $200 so I'm going to order one anyway to see if I can adapt it to a version of the Tiregate swingaway.
There was a partial picture in the VW parts department and it looks very similar to what I checked under our T3 when I got home. For me the main issue is going to be if i can make up a 2" female slide in place of the normal gooseneck fitting

As I mentioned before, the hardware should fit just fine, but I think electronics are different.
