When the car is cold (no <60°F), it shifts into reverse no problem. If I drive 30-60 seconds then stop at a red light, when the light turns green and I accelerate, the RPM’s increase but the car does not go forward for a 5+ seconds. It is never a problem after the car warms up. The transmission fluid was recently changed and the level is full.

Hello and welcome to the forums.
How was the fluid changed? Full pan drop/filter change? Just removed drain plug and refilled, or was a flush done? How was it refilled? A bit more info is needed to guide you to a solution.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply. 6 months ago I had a major service at an independent mechanic. I believe that transmission pan was dropped and the filter changed as they kept the car an extra day because the “re-usable” gasket broke. They needed to order a replacement but stuck to the flat rate for the major service and did not charge me the $200+ they cited as the cost of a new gasket. The receipt specifically mentions “transmission service with filter” and brake & power steering fluid flushes but not a transmission fluid flush so I assume the transmission filter and fluid were changed but the transmission was not flushed. Thanks!!

How do you know it's not shifting into 1st? Are you using VCDS to monitor things?
I did not explain that clearly. The gear shifter remained in First Gear when I stopped at the light. I did not touch the gear shifter, but when the light turned green and I accelerated, the RPM’s increased but the car did not move forward for 5+ seconds. This only happens when the car is cold. Thanks!!

If I remember correctly for 2004 - 2009 transmission temp needs to be between 30 - 35 C . Gears need to be run thru also

Yikes!! Did the mechanic know what he was doing? there is a definitive way in changing the fluid, the fluid spec, the way to top it up and must be done at 35 deg C. When it gets to 40 deg C, time to shut it off and let it cool enough to retool up the fluids.
If a shop tells me that that the transmission has a re-useable gasket and it broke...! That is first alarm bell !
There is lots of info on servicing the 8 speed Aisin transmission properly.
If there is not enough fluid in it, you will burn out something and possibly wreck the transmission. They are very expensive to replace!
