Club I need some help, advice and direction

I changed out my Valve Cover Gasket due to oil leak into spark plug sleeves, I did drivers side first and when I opened passenger side Valve Cover Gasket, I noticed the Upper Camshaft closet to HPFP have been damaged and scorched by the Roller Cam Rocker Arm on the 2 front Camshaft Lobes closest to radiator

if I would want to replace camshaft and Roller Cam Rocker Arm would I have to remove engine or can it be done with engine in vehicle

ill send pic on next post

I found Mountain View Garage pulling 3.6 VR6 engine with his 3 kids with a pallet jack and wood pallet

The V8, sure more complicate then V6 but looking at how he does it im sure I can use his way to get the V8 out

I Fry Chicken for a living and paid of my Touareg don't want to let it go, I lifted it with 33 inch tires, did lots of maintance work on, pulling the engine I can do more preventive maintance along replacing camshaft, I might as well do timing chain and guides with a carbon clean, o rings in the back , new fluids

anyone that has pulled V8 FSI please shed some info and knowledge it will be very much appreciated , im planing on recording the entire break down and removal of engine put back in

suggestion on camera or go pro set up please for documentation would be apreciated

please like and support Mountain View Garage video, I think his video is a game changer to Touareg repair with most owner DIYers being scared on pulling engine

That camshaft is toast and the rocker arms ohhh my!!! I wonder what happened. Did you have any symptoms or issues besides oil leak from valve covers. I also have a V8 FSI.

I do think if you can buy or rent an engine hoist, it might be easier pulling only the engine out instead of dropping the subframe and pulling the whole engine/transmission/transfer case unit out
Look at this MY07 Q7 Engine Overhaul 11-18-2017 to 01-15-2018 -- She is alive and running fine again!!!!

Interesting video with props to the Mountain View Garage family for wrestling the engine, transmission with drivetrain, subframe, and front suspension out using floor jacks.😬

Those pictures are gold and that dude is a beast for removing and completely rebuilding the V8. 🤩

I know for a fact that the transmission and transfer case can be removed while leaving the engine and front suspension attached to the body/frame and the Q7 dude proves the engine can be removed without taking the transmission and front suspension/subframe out. I would only wonder if it is actually less of a headache to just remove everything rather than attempting to wrestle out the V8 by itself. @Franco Waters, maybe try contacting the Q7 dude for advice?

That Q8 V8 rebuild should be problem-free for a long time.

Mountain View Garage actually has videos on removing the V10 TDI engine. Pretty much the same procedures.
I agree with you. The more I watch the videos and look at the pictures, I think it'll be easier to pull the whole unit as out rather than fighting with the engine.

Wow great job, man that’s some serious workmanship one day I’d like to build a engine out like that in pieces !!

That’s some real man “Lego “ stuff lol

I don’t have a hoist or much work table and equipment, I might be wrong but taking engine and transmission as whole on subframe drop on pallet to work off

I’m all hears to suggestions and shared info i was looking at your pics over and over and kept smiling

The Q7 pics are someone else's. They are not mine😅
it is definitely a huge task,
You may not need much equipment. How deep are you wanting to get into the engine? Just camshaft?

Engine/Transmission with subframe off might be less work, using subframe as a stand to keep engine upright to work on and repair what I can see from there

wood pallets I have plenty, I can buy a few 4x4 wood pieces to make engine rest comfortable on wood pallet, Pallet Jack I can easily rent

so far I lifted my Touareg in my garage all by myself, replaced both HPFP, fuel flags and fuel filter housing in gas tank, figured out crankshaft problem and replaced, repair Transmission harness leak with tranny oil change, been working on secondary air injection and doing all oil changes at home

Im a bit scared trying to replace camshaft with engine in car and get to a point realizing I need the engine out to complete job , then that will add more work on

I have a repair manual of my VIN, and looked up VW tools need for timing/camshaft job
T40058 - Crankshaft Socket - $16
Special tool 3242 - Crankshaft Locking Pin - $28
T10133 - Injector tool Set - $130
T40116 - Camshaft Locating Pins - $75
T40070 - Camshaft Locking Tool - $45

If I miss any tools let me know

I would not attempt to replace camshaft with the engine still in place. You've done quite a bit of work there 👏
You're set on special tools. I will look for what other special tools is needed for the timing
There is a gasket between the lower half of the cylinder head and upper half. Some refer to it as cam girdle. I would replace those gasket. Besides valve covers, it is the main source of oil leak into the spark plug hole. and The problem it can only be done with the camshaft out of the way. I would think about that too.

When I look at the Camshaft diagram from this angle, I can see it being possible to replace Camshaft with engine in car and not remove engine

Question ? Can Camshaft be taken out and keep the Camshaft Adjuster Unit (17) locked in time and remove bolt (18) and slide out Camshaft ?

I wonder if replacing only he rock arms would suffice, but the problem I see is a huge chunk of the last cam lobe is gone and the second to last cam lobe is not in the best of conditions.
So I see the same thing happening again if you were to only put a new adjuster/lifter

Not a V8, but I did just recently have the entire engine/drivetrain out of my 09 TDI, and then had to repull the transmission by itself. In my opinion, you'll save yourself a lot of pain and heartache by pulling everything out together, versus trying to just pull the engine. I did mine with a cherry picker and a floor jack. Pulling the entire front clip apart is a bit tedious, but not complicated. And being that VW designed everything to drop out of the bottom together, disconnecting everything from the body is quite simple and then it pulls straight out.

Wow, what a list! I see you are going to remove the manifold. I would add the two oil filter housing o-rings
1) VAG-N90959701
2) VAG-079103121BE

That Touareg should problem free after all this.
Are you doing timing chain?
