Just driving down the road and then...

Tap,tap, tap.Clunk, Clunk, Clunk, Clunk, Clunk,-(Center Console Judders)+Clunk, (Center Console Judders)+Clunk then I slow down quickly and as I decelerate lower than 30/40KPH is basically turns into nothing but a slight whistle.

I've looked under the car, absolutely no issues or play in the shaft. I am stumped.

Prays it's not the tranny

Any ideas and suggestions?

I'm at a loss on where to proceed from here or what the likely culprit is..

Help appreciated!

Sounds like the centre bearing rubber tearing which is a common issue.

Look up "The Jimi Fix" (spelt exactly as I have typed it) if you want a quick and easy fix that started out in the Porsche Cayenne world, costs next to nothing and stands the test of time.

Is it just a bumpy road, or is your car getting jerked around by said mystery sound?

Not a bumpy road, it's not particularly jerking the car. Just rattling the hell out of the center console/noises. I didn't go faster then 50kph in the vid. I did turn twice and pulled back into my driveway at the end if that was the concern? Pretty sure everyone's correct and it's a worn driveshaft. Car's done 78,000k's. I don't think the shafts ever been replaced so I am expecting that to be the culprit. Will have a mechanic confirm this next week.

T the video just seemed much jerkier than it should have in my opinion. Driveshaft bearing can definitely cause that.

Are you sure it’s not the bearing support rubber thing? Did you watch the video I posted above. Can you go under the car and check? At 70k you don’t have to replace the whole shaft. Waste of money and parts. And waste of time and headache for you or the next owner as the support will die in 70k again.

Appreciate the tips guys!

Might replace the whole shaft seems about the same price/difficulty.

Anyone made a solid metal/silicon mount? Like a high quality permanent replacement?

Regards.
Like I said above the problem is not the shaft. The problem is bearing support bracket. Get one of the solution ranging from the free 10$ jimi fix to the 400$ other stuff. See videos above

X2 on not bothering with a new shaft!

Typically the centre bearing rubber is good for 60-80,000 miles or 5 to 6 years.

Some go sooner, some go later, and some owners may never have the problem at all!

The Jimi Fix or the Viagra Fix (the blue ring) both work and both last, the latter being a bit tidier and easier as you don't have to fiddle with several pieces of hose.

It didn't sound like a tailshaft noise to me. It sounds like it's coming from the bell housing and that's where the timing chain and tensioners are. I'm not sure what engine you have, but if it's a V6 petrol (especially 3.6fsi) I'd be looking into the timing chain tensioners (there was also a recall on the oil pump gear drive bolt that is in the same area on the earlier Touaregs (as it had a tendency to come undone). Ive had to do my chain and it was a similar noise, usually around 2000rpm. If it is, its an engine in and out job, and also if it is I wouldn't run the engine any more as if the chain goes it'll be a major engine fail for sure.

If it is a tailshaft, the simple and cheap repair is to book it into a driveshaft business. For around AUD$400 they will remove the shaft, replace the bearing and re-balance and refit it again. In and out in a day and pretty cheap for the work they do (I did mine in Perth recently). Hope its a quick fix

I had the centre bearing support fall apart at 130k on my 2009 TDI, my local mech sourced a look-alike for $140, dropped the centre shaft, removed and replaced, charged me for 1 hour labour, all up $270. No requirement to change the shaft.
