I don't know anything about Volkswagens or towing.

First, what is this green plug?
Is this the trailer hitch wiring harness?

If so, where should i find the 4-pole connector?
I haven't installed a bumper, but I took off the plastic part of the rear bumper where the receiver will stick out and didn't see any wires.

From this green box, can i plug in a brake controller?
If so, where can i find the brake controller harness?

That's where the tow module that you don't have should be.
You don't have the tow package, so you will not have the physical rebar\tow hitch\receiver at the back, the associated module and wiring harness, or the under dash brake controller plug to make use of it all. Adding all those will not be cost effective.

Oddly, I do have the brake controller under the dash. Do you know a part number for the tow module?

I have the brake controller connection under the dash, the tow module, and the green connector in the photo has 2 brown wires, a black/red, and a blue wire.

I dont have a brake controller connected to the brake controller connection.

Also, my tow module has 3 places for connections that are already plugged into it.

To utilize that green plug I posted about, it would cost over $400 for a single harness (7L0971124E): https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/harness/7l0971124e/

Instead, of paying so much for a single harness, im probably going to pay about $530 for the tow hitch, towing harness, brake controller, and a 4 pole to a 7 blade connector.

Step 1: install bumper ($152.00)
Step 2: towing harness install ($72.40)

Price: $224.40

Step 3: install tekansha prodigy ($280)

Step 4: install 4 pole to 7 pole connector ($29)

Price: 533.40

For anyone interested, here's my notes from the beginning of all this:

Vw touareg towing capacity info:
Booklet3.5 pg.6
Trailer with brakes: 7,716 lbs
Trailer without brakes: 1650 lbs
Tongue load: 618 lbs
Total weight (vw touareg and travel trailer combined weight): 14,208 lbs

Trailer hitch install:

Rock auto: $151.89.
Towing capacity: 6,000 lbs

Good website: https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitch/Curt/13220.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAno_uBRC1ARIsAB496IWVcIJDTDE0JKbttpw92xLVhNac4Hw5R8SfV0CU9h73U6Up2kMh00UaAqSJEALw_wcB

Best bet- tow a trailer that's about 6,000 lbs. This is usually a 24 ft trailer. Check trailer weight. Not a bad idea to go to a weigh station to check our weight for the first couple of times.

Wiring to tow a trailer (just the lights, not the brake controller):

T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector (part number# 118509)

Price: $72.40

Video:

Good website: https://www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/Volkswagen/Touareg/2006/118509.html?VehicleID=20061176729

With the above, we can tow 1,650 lb trailers. For heavier trailers, we need a brake controller.

--------------------------------------------
Brake controller for trailers with brakes (this may need more research. Lots of variations):

If we have wiring under the dashboard (not likely):

Tekonsha 90195 P3 Electronic Brake Control

Price:$130.00

Tekonsha 90160 Primus IQ Electronic Brake Control

Price: $70.00

Good website: https://www.etrailer.com/bc-2006_Volkswagen_Touareg.htm

If no wires under the dashboard:

Tekonsha 90250 -

Price: $280.00

Also needs: needs a 7 pin connector on the rear of the vehicle.

Website: https://www.etrailer.com/s.aspx?qry=C57674

Price:$28.95

--------------------------------------------

If i need to add brake controller wires to the dashboard:

Price: $46.00
--------------------------------------------

Misc car weight info:

Summary:

Step 1: install bumper ($152.00)
Step 2: towing harness install ($72.40)

Price: $224.40
I think i can do steps 1 and 2.

Best scenario (this scenario isn't likely):
Step 3: install brake controller at the dash (cheap: $70, preferred: $130)

Price: 354.40

2nd Best scenario:

Step 3: Skip installing the universal brake controller wires and install tekansha prodigy ($280)

Question: how does the tekonsha prodigy know my vehicle is braking without the brake controller cables? How does a cigarette lighter remote tell my 7 pole adapter that my car is braking?

Note: the 4 pole trailer plug is just to tell the trailer which lights/turn signals should be on.

Step 4: install 4 pole to 7 pole connector ($29)

Price: 533.40

Worst scenario:

Step 3(so far, i don't think i can do this step): install universal brake controller wires ($46)

Step 4: install 4 pole to 7 pole connector ($29)

Step 5: install brake controller ($130)

Price (excluding labor for step 3): $429.40.

Note: labor isn't a cost I can estimate to this price.
