We purchased our 2004 two years ago and have had very few problems all things considered.

My lift gate wont open/unlock when using the button on the driver side door or key fob. Curious if anyone else has had this problem. On other cars I have owned every time you hit a button there is at least some sort of noise. My 2004 lift gate button and fob have always been completely silent.

Tomorrow I will check the fuses as I have recently located the fuse box via Youtube. If not the fuses could it be:
1. internal wiring.
2. a bad button on the driver side door
3. a bad exterior hatch release on the rear lift gate
4. something infinitely more ominous and expensive....

We've been opening the lift gate by opening the rear window (a recent discovery after owning the rig for two years) and using the emergency release. It is a manual door, aside from the ability to unlock/it does not automatically rise on opening (should it?)

I'm hoping to find a bad fuse. I will also try extracting and inserting the controlling fuse. Once open using the emergency release, the lift gate functions and closes with the familiar 'wheeeeeowwitt' noise.

Some other posts have discussed being in 'towing mode'. I'm not sure what that means.

Please forgive my amateur car repair description. I'm much more comfortable discussing bicycle repair. Thanks for any input! - the Cunninghammer

In this area you need to check some things like and actuator a microswitch the handle by itself remember you have a vehicle with a lot of electronic stuff so get the vehicle to a vw specialist to check this first.
