I am happy to announce the Reg has made it this far. As is it's usual stuff, Battery died at 250,000 miles. Replaced it and hoping to get to 300,000 miles.
I am looking for a replacement, and considering another Reg.
So my question is: Do the 08's, 09's have a bunch of issues similar to all I have gone thru with the 03? My mechanic told me the 07's are about 30% better. I would welcome any feedback from forum members.

wow nice to see that many miles on touareg :) and what engine??? V6, V8 or V10? as far as i can see and read from other members best touareg is 08 V8 but some members are very happy with T2 V6 3.0L TDI
Good to know! What oil and how often did you chnage? Do you still have original Transmission, and Front/Rear Differentials? Transfer Case Original?
Pretty impressive mileage... :)

Some members know more about this, but at least I can tell the driveshaft bearing issue is there with the T2 as well.

Electrically, the T2 has Canbus version 2.0, whereas the T1 had older version of Canbus (1.6 ?). This might have some effect on e.g. retrofitting stuff such as nav units and camera systems...

Around here in Europe, the 3 liter diesel is considered most issue-free engine, although we probably have less gasoline engines than in your region.

And the improved 176kW / 239 HP diesel (code CASA) is really nice, acceleration (on specs) is 7,8 seconds whereas the 165 kW version is nine point something...

Just my two Eurocents.
Look for a low mileage 08-10 gasser.
Significant additional costs are associated with 3.0 tdi, espicially considering it has half the power of full size diesel trucks...

What additional costs do you exactly mean?

Considering total costs, it somewhat depends on where you live. Some countries favor lower CO2 emissions associated with diesel engines and therefore have lower taxes for cars running with diesel (well, at least what the manufacturer has stated for type approvals) and the consumption (MPG) is definitely lower in V6 diesel engines than V8 gasoline.

But like they always say, your mileage may vary...
I owned two 04s, a V6 gas and a V10 TDI. Both vehicles had essentially everything replaced on them. On dependability I'd give them a 0/10, on driving experience I'd give the V10 a 12/10, the V6 a 5/10 (way underpowered).

I owned an 07V8 gasser with the 350hp FSI engine, and an 09 V6 TDI. Power wise the TDI gives you the same driving experience..sure the spec sheet shows the V8 as having more power, but I don't drive around at 6,000rpm to realize the 350hp. 07 was millions of times more dependable than the 04s. The 09 has an adblue failure, after that it was bulletproof. I'd give them both a 9/10 on dependability and pick the TDI over the V8 for driving experience, but you can't go wrong with either of these two engines.

I've got 40K miles on my 2013 V6 TDI and its been bulletproof. 10/10 on dependability and 9.5/10 on driving experience (needs air suspension to get a 10/10).

So all to say, the newer you get, the more depenability you get. I'd aim for a well maintained 09/10 TDI or 08/09 V8 if I were you.

What do you mean by this? I wouldn't expect my 3.0L diesel in the Touareg to put out the same power as the 6.6L duramax in my truck...they are completely different vehicles made for completely different purposes with absolutely nothing in common. If you must compare to full size trucks the 3.0TDI is almost identical in power output to the 3.0L V6 diesel found in the Dodge 1500.

.
Well the 2008/2009 models sound great, but 250k mi on a 2004 is nothing to sneeze at either
250K on your 04 = you've more than gotten your money's worth.
Lets go for 300K! Go egg! :)

Interesting stat to consider:
3,898 gasser threads
12,988 TDI threads

Plenty of 2009+ 3.0 TDI drama before it contributed to the current VW nightmare... Only reason to torture yourself with any modern diesel is for the 400HP/800TQ.
I am a gasser only also. Not that there is anything wrong with being a diesel... it's your life to live in your own way.
I've got 97k miles on my 2004 V8, and with a new alternator, it's once again smooth and powerful.
