8AY = Radio/navigation system
9VL = Sound package "2"
X9A = National sales program USA

Since 04 and 05 are CD NAV, is it worth swapping to an 06 DVD RNS2 head?
Is it easy?

I don't care how well the NAV works compared to modern stuff, just want to get basic maps that are not 10 years old. (and not pay an arm and a leg per disc and have to keep swapping)

Well, the 06 head can sit till I figure it all out.

I was thinking the units were the same with just a change from CD to DVD (and maybe a upgrade of the NAV processor, memory, etc.)

So, 04 is digital out to a remote amplifier with CAN-BUS control of fader, etc. Right?
And the 06 is analog out. External amp or internal amp? Fader control in amp over CAN-BUS or I head and amp is dumb?

As for the dash display. Did something chant to prevent an 06 head from talking to the vehicle display, wheel controls, etc..?

If I was going to attempt o bring it up to full 06 electronics (or as far as I need to go to get DVD NAV, all speakers working and dash and steering wheel controls, what do I need off an 06 donor vehicle?

You should be certain the CANBUS is the same for both model years or you will need an interface unit (and I'm not sure they exist).

So where is the break point between versions of CAN-BUS and how can you tell?
Was the CAN only used to talk to the amp, or is the same connection also talk to the display (and steering wheel buttons)?

CANBUS is the system the various computer driven parts of the car use to talk to each other - the WHOLE car, every part. Each version of CANBUS is equivalent to Windows 98 vs Windows XP vs Windows 7 etc. They will NOT be able to talk to each other without a translator interface.
The easiest way I can tell when the systems changed is through the folks at RossTec, the makers of VAGCOM/VCDS. There may be a sticky or better info on other forums like TDI Club or VW Vortex. Those folks should be able to tell if the '05 Touareg (or any VW product) has the same or different CANBUS version as an '07 or '09 or whatever.

I am quite familiar with CAN-BUS. Unlike an operating system is more akin to IPv4 vs. IPv6 with versions changing rather slowly and a fair amount of interoperability.

What I don't know if how VAG has implemented it in various years of Touareg.

It can be vehicle-wide, or it can be segmented, hence if two pieces of equipment needed to communicate only with each other a CAN -Bus link could be used, or the data could be thrown on a vehicle-wide CAN-Bus.

I guess is the platform went through a major update in electronics, the version might be changed, but that seems unlikely. The Diagnostics went to CAN in 2007, so 04 and 06 should be on the same side of that change. Of course that doe snot mean other subsystems were stable.

Looks like I have a bit of research to do, maybe one or both heads will end up for sale,
