HI all,

Quick question. Does anyone know what needs to be changed at this interval? I can't find anything on it and I'm due for a service soon. Also, what about changing the transmission fluid. All of the VW dealers here in southern Germany won't touch it because they say it's a lifetime fluid which I don't believe because no fluid is lifetime. I have a good independent shop that I go to that actually has real mechanics instead of these new age computer mechanics. Lol I'm also thinking about telling him to change my differential fluid in the front and rear. Any advice on belts, pulleys etc would be great. Thanks in advance.

There is a thread on changing the transmission fluid, it is necessary and does make a difference to shift quality.
There is also a thread on changing the diff and transfer case fluids, can't help with the rest, sorry.

Change the ATF in the gearbox, the front and rear diff oils AND the transfer box oil which you get in its 850ml bottle from your VW dealer.

There are how-to threads and post on here but a good indie should be fine doing them all.

Give them some plastic bottles so they can collect samples as they drain to show you the difference between used "lifetime" fluids and fresh!

Thats a bit strange especially coming from a dealer in Germany.

"Lifetime" in VW's understanding and by their own definition is the warranty period. Was that 3 years or xxx number of kms ???

This would then be a reasonable understanding that the the fluid should be replaced ever (i would guess cant remember) 80000 kms .... or was it 60000kms. Which is a normal life cycle.

Regardless i would not go to a dealer there are much more knowledgeable services shops. I would go for a specialised Euro shop in your area who work on VW, Porsche, BMW, Benz etc etc

Irrespective of what the official VW service recommendation is I have taken the line with my TDi is that transmission, diffs and transfer fluids be replaced around the 80-100K mark, as well as the serpentine belt and tensioner together with the toothed (turbo) belt.

I am currently at the 172K mark and these items will again be replaced shortly as I approach the 200k mark.

I look at these as normal service items.
