I've been talking about this for a while now, ( http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f44/maxxis-bighorns-32652.html )but I finally took the plunge on some 16" steel wheels off a T5 Transporter. The wheels are in good condition, but were full of scratches. I didn't like the colour anyway (plain steel wheel silver), so I decided to have them painted.

The guy who's painting them for me gave me one back last week, just to see if I'm happy with the colour before he paints the rest. The colour I chose is very similar to the car (Off-Road Grey) but a couple of shades darker. It's also a standard VW colour. I also got a used set of 265/75R16 Maxxis Bighorns, just to do a trial fit. Once I have all 5 wheels back, I'll go do a couple of trails to see what it's like.

The pics show the result. I have 1/2" clearance between the intercooler vent and the tyre at full bump, so it won't touch anywhere. This is a 31.8" tyre and I suspect the fact that I've lifted the Treg 40mm with the Seikel kit, gave me a bit of extra clearance.

If all goes according to plan, I'll fit some new tyres sometime next year, but it won't be Maxxis. Top of my list right now is BFG Mud Terrain KM2's. Their 265/75R16 has a Q (160km/h) speed rating, where the Maxxis's are only M (130km/h) rated. The BFG is also slightly bigger (31.9") but I have enough clearance to fit them. Both have 3-ply sidewalls.

In the mean time I'll swap betweeen the 17" and 16" sets as required. Hopefully this will save the paintwork on my 17" Canyons.

All I need to do now is make a plan with a center cap or something.

Dunno... :D I'll let you know when I find out...

I'm currently running 265/65R17's but I'm mainly interested in the difference a Mud Terrain vs. an All Terrain would make off road. I can't get mudders in 17".

The other reason is that 16" tyres are much easier to obtain in an emergency when venturing into Sub-Saharan Africa.

Did you mean in 265/5/17? Cause I am planning to buy 245/70/17, though from coopers or BFG, haven't checked on Maxxis.

Did you have the chance to try them already?

Charlize Theron in Hiking Boots

Here she is with her new shoes... :D

One thing though, if a quiet ride is your thing, forget about doing this. Geeeez these things make a noise...

I'll be running two sets for now. The 17's with TPMS for normal use and the 16's without the TPMS in the bush. Once the 17" Bridgestones are finished, I might go back to the "street" 235/65R17 setup, depending on cost. Not much point in having 17" A/T's and 16" M/T's, I think...?

Next on the list - Decent rocksliders !!

My son has Bighorns on his Lux....bloody good tyres in the dirt and mud. I guess owing an R5 gives you the option of 16's, which is a bonus over the rest of us. Interesting that the T5 16" wheels have the same offset. The new T5 runs 17's. It's definately not an easy choice to get the right tyre combo.
BTW...I tried the brown colour scheme you have in your profile pic....my wife not impressed, so back to the slate grey, which I notice is the same (?) as yours

The T5 wheel doesn't have the same offset. The 17" Canyon is 7.5Jx17 ET55, while the steel wheel is 6.5Jx16 ET51. Because of the narrower wheel, the outside edge of the rim is 8.7mm more inboard and the inside edge, 16.7mm more outboard (away from the suspension strut).

There is a different 16" steel wheel specified for the R5, which is 7.0Jx16 ET54, but it's not available here in SA. For reference, the part no. of the wheel I'm using is 7L0 601 027 D.

The Canyon also has a load capacity of 875kg, while the steel wheel is only 840kg, but since the max allowable (rear) axle load for my Treg is 1570kg (785kg per side), I figured I'm still OK. ;)

Yeah I quite liked the brown two-tone, but I got fedup of the dirt on my legs everytime I get in and out of the car, so I went back to the original Offroad Grey. :D

Not sure I follow you first question... :confused2:

I can get a 265/70R17 Maxxis in a M/T, but it only comes with a 2ply sidewall. These are also 31.8", just like the 265/75R16's I put on now. The 245/70R17 is very close to the 265/65R17 I've been running, but since I often end up in sandy terrain, I prefer the wider tyre.

Like I said before, my reasons for going the 16" route is:
1. More 16" options when heading north across the border.
2. More 16" M/T options
3. More sidewall = bigger footprint when deflating in sand.
4. No damage to my 17" Canyon alloys.

I haven't had a chance to try them out in the dirty stuff yet. I only put them on yesterday. Can't wait, though... :D
