Hello again! Ok so I just got a 2004 VW Touareg v8 the other day with 142000km on it. I went into jiffy lube and they said it looks like the original timing belt and it's cracked and worn out really bad. Here I am thinking it's like an easy $200.00 fix ....but no.... (scratching head) I was quoted $1500.00 just to replace timing belt from a local mechanic here in Toronto Ontario.

From what I've read that's what dealerships charge and they do the water pump and some other things with that price. Like ...honestly I had such a weight off my shoulder when I finally got this car and less then 48hrs it's like BAM!! They throw this on back.

SOOOOO my question is..... dose this price sound right to you? Am i missing something here? Will I have to spend $1500.00 every 80k ? Dose any one know where I can get this done with out making my bank account cry? If I have my window down I can hear a small whistling sound like a faint tea kettle.... is that because of the timing belt? My head hurts now :( please help!

Do not use jiffylubes ... nor VW dealers!

Find a good VW specialist who has worked on Touaregs.

Your car is on borrowed time so the job needs doing and, yes, it's every 80K or 5 years, whichever comes first and, yes, it's the belt, tensioners, water pump and thermostat every time.

You have bought a car that was expensive when new and can be expensive to maintain too, the more so as it gets older and things go wrong as they age or wear.

No idea on the noise - that could be a duff PCV or the drive shaft centre bearing or something else.
