In the market for one 21" Mallory wheel and tyre that I can carry as a spare when touring with a van

Welcome.
A couple of points to consider.
The OEM 21" rims are not an ideal rim for towing, due to the sidewall. Some owners do tow with these rims, but it really does consign them to A+ grade roads.
The cost (ex-dealer) for a new Mallory rim will be $2k+ per rim.
A set of 19" Porsche/VW rims with stud pattern and offset to match the 7P R Line and ATR+ tyres will cost about the same one replacement 21" rim (new).
There are plenty of posts here in the forum by members who have gone the 19" route (including myself) New rims for my R Line

Thanks Steve. I've been towing with it for a couple of years using the standard 21" Mallory rims but mostly short trips of a few thousand kms and it hasn't been an issue, even on B and some C grade roads.
We plan to do a lot more over the next few years with a new bigger van and I'd like to carry a full size spare. Would prefer not to have the cost of a set of 5 x 19" rims though.

I purchased a spare 21 inch Mallory rim from ECS - much cheaper than dealer prices. They seem to rarely come up in Australia second hand despite many people changing to smaller rims ... there must be lots sitting in garages just in case
I just tow on highways so no issue for me and I dont drive off road in the Treg - I borrow my sons Landcruiser for that if I need to

Thanks - do you have a contact or website for ECS please? A google search shows up all manner of things
If I recall correctly the computer based shipping estimated from their website was ridiculously high and when i emailed them they came back with a much cheaper price for shipping

HI "FirstTimeTregger" Where did you end up in getting a spare 21" for your rig? I also have a Touareg (2016) with 21" wheels. Have been considering getting a set of 20" but really finding it hard here in AU. Would be interested to hear if you were able to get anything here in AU or did you go with one from ECS Tuning?

Sorry for the late reply....haven't been looking on the forum much lately.
I ended up getting a single 21" Mallory rim and 75% tyre (Pirelli Scorpion Verde 275/40/R21) from AGR Wheels and Tyres in Sydney. They were great.
We've travelling for about 6 weeks now and on the roads these tyres and wheels are great (even on B and C class roads). However we did some rough rocky and corrugated dirt roads in and out of Mt Ive Station in South Australia and blew one of the tyres even though I'd lowered pressures to 30psi (I usually travel on roads when towing with pressures around 45-48psi).
I managed to get a replacement tyre in the Barossa today but have decided to change to 19" rims with 255/55/R19 tyres when we get home.
Have a look at the link in the first reply to this thread from Steve_L - it has great information about rims and tyres and the process he went through. He also sourced his rims from AGR in Sydney.
Having said all that, if you've kept the 21" OEMs I will have a spare one to sell when back in Melbourne next week, but will keep the originals in the garage for when I eventually sell it or for general driving around town when not travelling.

The tail to this story is that I've just ordered a set of 5 second-hand 19" Porsche rims with new Pirelli Scorpion A/T Plus 255/55/R19 tyres from AGR Wheels and Tyres with TPMS valves and VW centre caps for $3500 (delivered to Melbourne).
Thoroughly recommend AGR - I rang them late today and soke with Ramy, he immediately sent me a photo of the Porsche rims along with a quote for the package deal and will dispatch them to me on Monday.
Fingers crossed they arrive next week as we're only home for a few weeks before venturing off again on a half-lap for 5 months.
