Sorry to hear it needs such drastic service, but I never get tired of seeing engine drop photos like that!

Seems like a cam shaft is toasted, or something to do with the valve train, since it's only happening on 1 bank. And as usual, VW's approach is to replace the ENTIRE assembly! At least it's not on your dime....

I agree. That is crazy. I wonder why replacing the engine wasn't less $$ than buying it back? <shrug>

Must explain why I don't work at a repair shop....
