Greetings from the Q7 world! I'm cross posting here since there's way more traffic and I'm hoping someone has some insight.

I've used my 2011 Q7 TDI to tow a 5800 lbs travel trailer regularly for three years, with no issues. I recently deleted and am running Malone Stage 2 SW. On my first towing trip (200 miles each way) since the delete, 1h in towing at 72 MPH in manual mode, the cruise dropped off and the trans temps began to climb and I was down to ~4 gears. Being a season VAG enthusiast, I looked @ the codes and said "huh, I guess the TCU went out to lunch for a bit and blamed the TCC", cleared the codes and went on my merry way. On my return trip I left it in D and suffered with the droning exhaust and had no issues. On the next towing trip (120 miles each way), the trip out was fine no issues, drove in D. 1.5h into the trip back, cruise dropped out again and I was down gears. I pulled over, turned the car off and turned it back on, the trans was back with all gears and shifting normally. This happened a few more times, I did finally end up with a CEL and the VCDS scan showed this:

So, it looks like there is an issue....but the question is where. I'm familiar with the TCC and its role and certainly it not locking up is why the trans temps climbed. My Q7 has the dieselgate fix done before I bought it, I changed the transmission coding to Cayenne last year mid-tow season, the only thing that has changed since towing last year is the delete/tune and a trans oil change with Idemitsu TLS-LV. Questions:
  • Has anyone seen the TCC TCM code or the implausible data ECU code? If so what fixed it?
  • Has anyone had issues towing post delete? Terrain is rolling midwest hills.
To me, this seems to point to some incompatibility in the ECU-TCM communication post-fix and post-tune or perhaps a flakey TCC solenoid. I'm hoping it is the former and not the latter, since it appears the TCC solenoid can only be replaced with a valve body swap. I will be reaching out to Malone tomorrow. I have a hard time believing it is something else with the transmission, mostly because it is a pretty robust trans and my Q7 was well maintained prior to my ownership. TIA!

CHeck the wiring at the TCM under the seat for ATF wicking.

Bumping this up again. The issues seemed to be related to towing with the stage 2 tune, so I rolled back to a stock delete tune and that was fine....until it wasn't this weekend- I got the code towing on the stock tune. Just checking to see if anyone has any insight. TIA!

i had the same thing happen with one trailer i owned...it would do it some times and unlock the converter...youd need to cycle the key to get it back....no one knew anything or could help. Ended up destroying that trans.

ended up being a wiring issue in the trailer causing havoc when hooked to the vehicle....never had an issue ever again with multiple trailers and more weight...it was not a heavy trailer at all

220k+ is a decent amount of milage.... have you changed your trans fluid and filter yet?

This is a really interesting data point. Granted I towed this trailer for months prior to the issue, but I'll have to look back and see if it happened after I pulled it out of storage.

i towed that same trailer for nearly 2 years without issue...then one day it happened then..more and more and eventually smoked the converter from it because couldnt figure out the issue...i believe it was a wiring short that needed to wiggle as you tow because some times it wouldnt cause an issue

Put in a new trans, sold the trailer never had an issue ever again....however the guy who bought my old trailer happened to sell his wrangler and get a tdi touareg as he admired mine when he was over to buy the trailer....sure enough a few trips later he had the same issue with his touareg...but he didnt know enough to get out of the throttle or cycle the key and destroyed the trans right there.

the issue is believed to be in the wiring for the lights causing feedback into the touaregs trailer sensing tech, as it adjusts the trans when hooked up its my belief that is what caused it...the trailer is all aluminum and a 1000lbs at best...ive towed way heavier and tuned for years since without flaw.

This was 2 touaregs....different years, bought in different ends of the country and the only same factor was that trailer...its my speculation the wire is sorting somewhere and it happens as you trailer because it didnt always cause an issue. I tow a few times a week and its been 2 or 3 years and we have not had a single issue with either one since losing that trailer

That is pretty convincing. What sort of trailer? Did it have trailer brakes?

i bought it brand new...all aluminum 2 place snowmobile enclosed trailer....no brakes its only 1000 lbs.

Tried changing trans fluid once the converter started shuttering...made it insanely worse, by the time i limped it and found a new trans the shop had to torch it off the car to removed it.

Great info. Did they replace the torque convertor and/or valve body when they replaced the trans?
replaced the entire trans with a new unit.....i then threw out what was left of the cut off converter then sold the trans to cover most the cost of the replacement

Hi everyone.

I have a 2014 Touareg TDI with 140k miles. For several years I have yrktreg's TCM tune and just recently added the stage 2 tune to pull this trailer. I have done the transmission fluid flush as well. I recently purchased an aluminum 16x7.5x7' interior height trailer. Weighs roughly 2k lbs unloaded and I put three sleds in it. Total towing weight might have been around 3500 pounds, although the frontal area of the trailer is pretty large with the extra height and being 7.5' wide. I also use a curt bluetooth trailer brake system.

When i bought the trailer I drove 4 hours home with no issue. I tried locking in 8th gear with manual mode at 72mph. The Touareg pulled the trailer but would lose mph on grades. To be honest it was working pretty hard to maintain this speed. I slowed down and locked it into 7th. I wanted better towing performance and had been meaning to get a stage 2 tune anyway. I bought the tune from malone and rawtek deletes during black friday sale this year and installed shortly thereafter. I pulled the trailer on a few short 30mi stints without issue. This past weekend my dad pulled the trailer with 3 sleds up to my brother in Minnesota, a 5 hour drive. This same issue occurred after 45miles with the cruise on. The cruise turned off and the torque converter seemingly unlocked. He was thinking the trans was slipping but not sold since it still pulled, just ran up to 3000+ rpm. I modified VCDS and he confirmed it stayed in 8th gear and didn't downshift. We hypothesized that the torque converter was unlocking. He took off again and the issue came back multiple times. He reported the issue happened both under cruise and without cruise. We have not towed with the touareg since (this was a couple days ago). This did throw a check engine light and I scanned with VCDS and the following came up. I did a google search and found this thread. I read about the trailer potentially causing a fault which is interesting since I had some issues with getting my Touareg to register the lights. Turned out to be a blown fuse and faulty 7-way plug that wasn't making a good connection (see this thread - https://www.clubtouareg.com/threads/...ouareg.299897/). I was thinking there may be something with using the curt device and the issues I had with the 7-way plug but it sounds like the issue came up without any lights being plugged in. Perhaps the female socket in the car, or the towing module itself in the wiring is causing something? - maybe a red herring.

Anyway - looking for a resolution as well as the Touareg pulls wonderfully with the ECU and TCM tunes. I would be happy to help trouble shoot some ideas in tandem to try to get to the bottom of this. To me it does seem like a software glitch in the car that causes the torque converter to open up. I pulled a sxs in an open tandem axel from wisconsin to utah and back without issue. That was before the stage 2 tune though. Perhaps I can disable or enable "trailer mode" via VCDS instead of relying on the auto trailer detection? Maybe it's just the lift-gate operation that can be modified...

Show full scan results. You have more issues than what you are showing based on the FF data.

You should also log various parameters to see what's causing your issues when towing. You might be hitting EGT limits or something when trying to hold high gears with high load and your various mods.

The system is simply trying to help you and to self preserve but you're fighting it.

Here is the full scan result. It was sub-zero and the Touareg barely started in the cold on some mornings. I believe that is what caused a lot of the other errors to present, brining the battery down to critically low voltages when starting.

So as a side note, these Touaregs are pigs when it come to electrical demands. Due to the low rpm nature of the TDI engine, even if everything is ok as far as your engine loads and towing and egts, the system might be attempting to drop a few gears to recharge and or spin the alternator fast enough to provide the required electrical supply for things like the aux heater, battery recharging, all other electrical consumers, etc.

You are overlooking all of this and simply focused at holding top gear and basically in a tug of war with the systems that are trying to work at optimal system conditions as per design.

Look up my 0C8 temps post. Look up my starter battery post. I've logged quite a few parameters from both and it should give you some pointers in what to look at.

Check your battery, replace it, don't cheap out.
Ensure that you did the fluid check correctly, at the correct temp.
Check EGTs when towing that load, under those conditions and understand that a TDI that's tugging will run higher EGTs when compared to one that's doing the same work at higher rpm.

It is also possible that temps were low and the system was attempting to generate the required heat in the transmission, engine, coolant, etc. There are many possibilities.

Once you really understand why the autonomous system wants to drop a gear or two, you can figure out how to proceed.

i skimmed but - cruise control active = 0% accelerator w/ high load.
Ok, well if that's what was happening there, we can move on, but based on that load and rpm, I wouldn't expect anyone to set cruise on. The rpm/speed indicates 5th or 6th at best, and with a 90% load at that speed it's either struggling or under heavy acceleration. More details about the conditions are needed.
