The old sensor will be stuck in there. You can get it out by breaking it. In fact, you usually can't get it out without breaking it.
Once it is out, I have been able to slip a new one into the slot. This was new pads with new sensors. I was able to pull the sensor out and put it back while the pad was mounted.. which is what I think you are asking.
I have never tried it on used pads.
