I have an 05 Touareg V8 with only 76,700 miles and it has started making a weird noise. There is a distinct noise from the engine, like in the background. I don't know how to describe it but listen to it carefully and maybe multiple times You will be able to pick up the noise. Anyone with an idea as to what it is? I also feel like I think I can hear that same noise in the interior. AGAIN, listen to a consistent distinct noise inside the car. You will notice it goes faster with acceleration and slows down when slowing down. Also sounds like its in the background. ANYTHING WILL BE APPRECIATED!! Thank You!

I can't hear anything..... but I would suspect that you're about "due" for a timing belt around that milage......
Do you have any records of such service having been performed?

May not be the belt BUT... as above it is vital on the old V8s that the belt, tensioners, water pump and thermostat are changed every 80,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first.

As others have found, if the belt lets go the engine is toast.

I don't have it but before I bought the car, the owner showed it to me. I don't remember having paid much attention to it. But the service records are on carfax.

I took the car to my mechanic, who I trust more that than the dealership. He listened to the engine, like in the video up there. In the pictures below, I circle a part of the engine. He kept pushing that part in while the engine was running. He said the noise is coming from the circle part of the engine. Then he asked me how long hasn't this car's timing belt been changed. Thats when I told him I'm around mileage and he said it needs to be changed with the water pump and all the other good stuff. He is going to change them

Sure Nooby, I will check and get buy a copy.

I just want to be sure I got everything needed for a timing belt job and also things that needs to be changed at this interval. I'm looking at a CONTITECH PP297LK3 Pro series plus kit with water pump . The picture below is what is included in the kit. I will buy the thermostat and thermostat seal separately. Am I missing anything else?
