Sup guys.

New to the site and hope that you guys can help me.

I have a 2004 V6 and over the last few weeks the gearbox started to loose gears to the point that it only had one!
Then it just failed to start one morning i managed to get it plugged into vag com and it has loads of CAN faults in the engine ECU and NO communication to the gearbox control unit. I have checked the normal stuff ie fuses and plugs and there all good and in. Also i have power and earth to the control unit.

What do you think?

O I cant take it to a dealer as the country i live in doesn't have ANY dealers at all!!

One other thing.

If i where to order a new control unit does it need to be programmed to the car or is it just plug and play. (I have Vas5054a its like VAG com)

Cheers

I had a similar problem at around 70k km way back in 2009. Turned out it was some transmission control unit that apparently dies in half of the Touaregs dated 2003-05. Replaced it (parts and labour around $2k), and have been fine since then (+100k km), with only an occasional jerk when shifting from first to second. Maybe you have the same problem... in any case you'll need to take it a propert shop for analysis. Dont take it to the dealer, they charge more... a proper "grey market" mech shop specializing in VWs should be just fine.

Danny.. What codes does it show?

Limp mode on these is 3rd gear only..

This sounds like the TCU which is an easy part to swap. If the valve body has never been changed.. do it as well as the TCU.. I just did mine and everything works better on the transmission.
