I've seen references to updated software for the transmission computer on the early T1s. Having an 04 V10 I would assume there were some updates at some point. However, from what I see in VCDS none has ever been done on ours. Here's what the "Advanced ID" shows:

Address 02: Auto Trans
Control Module Part Number: 09D 927 750 BB
Component and/or Version: AL 600 6Q 0467
Software Coding: 0012342
Work Shop Code: WSC 31414
VCID: 6FAE13917F8FEE4697-5184

Flash Status
Programming Attempts: 0
Successful Attempts: 0
Programming Status: 00000000
Required Conditions: 00000000
Software
P0210

Misc.
VCDS Info:
Labels: 09D-927-750.lbl
If you have an 04 V10 I'd be interested to compare notes here.

Thanks!

As much as I'd love to say I could help (because I'd have a V10 TDI haha), you might want to PM someone like imquattro

This computer was from a very early V10... made in mid 2002. Interesting it has newer firmware! Also, the firmware version in the software is newer than the version on the case. Even though it says no flash attempts have been made...

Going to test drive the truck now and see if it's less stupid. One thing I can tell already: it lets you select 2nd gear from a stop in 4 High

Are you talking here about a replacement ECU?

If you are, I always understood that the V10 has two ECUS, one of which is a slave to the other and that once they have been paired, you cannot change the pairing so you will always need the matched pair?

I replaced the TCU, transmission control unit, which lives under the front passenger seat. Actually I didn't replace it completely, I unplugged the original TCU and hooked up the 2003 one, letting it rest on the carpet.

Observations:

The torque converter apply strategy is different. It no longer engine brakes (locking the converter) when you downshift in tiptronic - quite annoying. It will lock the converter if you blip the throttle so the RPMs match.
The apply-release-apply-release converter lockup strategy seems to be less herp-derp, but that could also be the TCU re-learning since I cleared it out.

I'll report back more after more test drives... which will have to wait since the driver's side tandem pump has started leaking badly

Can't remember if I've asked before but have you done a gearbox reset with the new TCU too?
