I have an '04 Touareg V8 and I travel between Dallas and Houston regularly. After about 250 miles, the a/c stops blowing air (or blows very, very little almost not detectable), not cold either. After parking for a while, maybe an hour, its back again. I think I recall reading somewhere about an excess of condensation causing the coils to freeze up? Ok so I am not sure if I even remember that correctly. Does anyone recall something like that? I do have what seems to be alot of condensation, water dripping from the underside of the car.

The dealership cannot duplicate the problem since it only happens on long trips, and therefore they have not been able to repair. I want to give them this info.

Any help is much appreciated!

evaporator freeze up is common

Your evap freeze up hunch is probably correct and the dealer should know that they will not be able to duplicate the problem in the shop or on short test drives. Make sure your evaporator drain is clear by checking whether your passenger floormat is dry. If so, they are clear.

My 04 Touareg will also do this occasionally in hot weather, as will my Audi A6. I normally hit the economy button for about 15 minutes and the evaporator defrosts. Then run the A/C until it refreezes.

Hi from Holland !

I had the same problem (2004 V8) it was the sensor from the evaporator (7 euro).
About 15km it was frozen and no air is coming out any more, after stop it works again.
You can see a lot of water under the car........

This sensor is located near the evaporator and you can easy change him (passenger side /under the dash).

Let me tell you guys what happened after I replaced ‘Evaporator Temperature Sensor (G 308)
First 2 days, still A/C didn’t work when it was only hot (Above 95F Degree)
After several days, it worked really fine when it was even real hot above 109F degree and I drove kind of long trip more than 2 hours drive.
The day before yesterday, didn’t work at all day.
Now, it is working very fine for 2 days…
Well… I am still watching it.

Mine is still at the repair shop. After replacing the alternator wiring harness the problem still was not fixed. Now the compressor has gone bad. Extended warranty says they will cover it thank goodness. This would have been a total of $4000 in repairs for me over the past month.

After the compressor is replaced, they still need to tackle the problem of no air blowing after 250 miles. In the mean time I am enjoying my Passat loan vehicle that has a great air conditioner!
