I have an 04 v6 Touareg with 81k miles and I have been trying to diagnose a horrible clunking noise coming from the front drivers side. The noise is VERY loud when hitting small potholes or uneven road. Driving on smooth roads or going over large bumps, such as the curb from my driveway to the street, there is no noise. It is horrible metal on metal clunking noise. It is so bad that the car is almost embarrassing to drive. Then noise is very audible from up to 1000 or so feet away. It sounds like a horribly broken coil spring. I have replaced in the last week the lower control arm on the drivers side, and front sway bar bushings. There is no noticeable movement in the upper control arm/balljoint and the spring is not cracked or anything else noticeable in the suspension area. I have also checked to make sure all the subframe bolts are tight. I did not use a torque wrench to check torque but I cannot tighten them anymore with a 3 ft breaker bar. I have also checked the driveshaft for excess play, I know the center support bearings always go bad, but mine has almost 0 play, definitely not enough play to cause any noise. Anyone have any other ideas for me to check? The clunk is very noticeable and annoying. Besides that there are no drive-ability issues, no uneven tire wear, no pulling from side to side or anything like that. Thanks

A friend's treg is having a similar issue. He has air suspension. We plan to remove the whole strut to check. He already replaced the lower arms and the sway bar links and bushings. We will be checking the upper arms and the mounts in a week I think. Maybe you should look at the rubber mounts at the top of the shocks. I will let you know what i find out.

With Air

You have the part numbers in the links. But i suggest you first tear down one side to check.

I will give them a look, but from what I know that is not a common failure on touaregs though. But obviously any part can fail. I do not have air suspension FYI. I will check that out tonight.

Hello crazyquik22023, I have a 2011 Touareg ,V6,3.6l.FSI that has IDENTICAL symptoms to yours. It is now fixed-simply !! To cut a long story short--- it was a loose BRAKE CALIPER !!! Everyone had been looking for the the complicated and expensive cause but missed the obvious. I took it to a front end specialist (rather than a VW specialist ) who was doing" front end inspections and safety reports for $28" aud.
Not sure of your location in the world but in Perth, Western Australia , I can certainly recommend PEDDERS SUSPENSION and STEERING.
Good luck,Stanman.

Thanks for the suggestion Stanman but it is definitely not a loose brake caliper in my situation. I have a 2004 so I have the 17z 6 piston calipers. Not sure if the Touareg 3's have fixed calipers or not. But in my case it is not a loose caliper. I have a strut mount ordered and will try to swap that and see if that fixes the noise.

Finally got the strut mount in and put it on yesterday. Still have horrible clunking noise. While I had the strut off I checked for anything else that could be causing this noise. Spring is in good shape, no cracks or anything like that. Strut seems to have good rebound still and no signs of leaking, I wouldn't suspect a bad strut to make this kind of noise anyways. The only thing I noticed is when I had the upper control arm disconnected from the spindle the ball joint seems a bit loose, nothing to crazy but definitely not tight like a new ball joint. I have never heard a bad ball joint make a clunking noise like this before though. Someone tell me if I am wrong and if you have heard of a bad ball joint making an extreme clunking noise over bumps. I am out of ideas at this point as to what could possibly be making this noise!!

Hi crazy, here is an idea i used to try to locate the source of the noise when my 2011 v6 fsi had the same symptom.
I made a "rough road" in my driveway out of short wooden blocks for about 2m in length. I got my wife to carefully drive back and forth over the blocks causing the "clunk" sound. I would walk/crawl(safely) as close to the wheel as possible. Did this about 20 times and was able to at least determine the clunk was low to the ground and central to the wheel-it turned out to be a loose caliper. Hearing the Clunk sound directly rather than hearing it thru the chassis makes a big difference.Worth a try. Good Luck, Stanman.
