Hi all,

I noticed the other day that the long term trip computer (#2) on my monochrome MFI doesn't seem to be working as it should. The total distance travelled etc. all seem fine, but the averages seem to be exactly the same as the short term trip computer (#1).

When I first start the car and look at the average fuel consumption on the long term trip computer (#2) it reads 0.00 l/100 km. Average speed has the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what module the car stores this information in?

I have a feeling it is related to the convenience/comfort module we had replaced to fix the sunroof. Hopefully just a setting in the module is wrong?

Thanks
Scott.

Never checked

I'd like to know too. I just went and checked my MFI 2 and it shows lots of hours etc, but the same fuel economy as the MFI#1.

I've done my long term fuel economy using a humble spreadsheet.

Something like this happened to Matthew@f, and he got a new combi-instrument after many months of arguing with VW. It was a known fault in at least early-2005 mono-MFI R5s. Mine didn't suffer from it.
I'm sure Matthew will chime in and tell us if his problem was the same or different.
The details of his adventures were lost in the dreaded server crash of early 2006!

yep well known issue that required the entire dash panel changed out (1 min job easy.) with a older panel... so common that i believe they ran out of old panels/clusters in aus and the uk. there is a software flash to fix it, at the time the s/w flash did not fix mine.. it may work now?

vw of aust rep (a real tool) denied it was a problem for 6 months or more!! I did not give up.. then he told me there was not a problem after he could not fix it and it was "normal" (again he was a tool) and told me to go away he could do no more, despite my info on this problem reported worldwide..

i did not give up and the waitara vw guy (with my clubtoureg evidence and data) solved it himself by fitting an older panel as above... maybe you could call them, ask for anthony the south african. mcarrols vw waitara with anthony and thier GM were great with this issue.

for me the ave consumption over time (mfi 2) was THE most important data and i would never have been happy until fixed.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't think I've seen a TSB for this but I guess I'll just get it checked out at the yearly service.

I'm not sure I feel like trusting my VW dealer with a dash panel replacement just yet, considering it took my a few goes for them to get the programming right in the comfort/convenience module after they replaced it.

MFI 2

Had my dealer check the MFI 2 out and he reckons there's a software fix being developed to fix it. Hopefully it's an improvement on Matthew's fix. I'll give him a bit to come good, if I haven't had a fix in the next month or so, I'll start whinging big time.

i was told that too, over 12 months ago.. the flash fix did not work..

speak to anthony as mentioned above as he may be able to give you some info to shortcut the long dealer process of trial and error...

if the newer clusters dont have the issue then it is indeed a very simple change out, mine was done while i waited..

one way of proving/forcing the issue is have them simply swap out the dash with a demo vehicle...

did they say the software fix was being developed in singapore?? this appears to be the aussie techno think tank head office before the motherland.. anyway that story has been around to my knowledge since early 2005!!!

just have them change out the dash for build date at least 6 months after yours.. it is literally a plug and play affair..

Update

All

I had my instrument cluster replaced yesterday and MFI#2 is working a treat. :joy:

It seems to also have provided me with the trailer lamp indications, but I'm still working that out, as I only had a trailer briefly connected yesterday. :-s

I pointed my dealer to all the info on this website and to Andrew at Waitara and they researched it all. They called me up a couple of weeks ago and asked me to book the Treg in to replace the instrument cluster. Didn't need to hound them or chase them up at all. Maybe I've got one of the better VW dealers out there. \:D/

One happy camper that's for sure. I reckon the way the treg's running now, it's only regular services for me, touch wood. Although, I'm keeping an eye on fluid levels, tailshaft whirring .....

That's great news Bob. I haven't had mine done yet, I think I'm going to wait until my regular service interval.

I had to take the car in a couple of weeks ago, as when I towed a trailer for the first time the indicators were coming on with the brake lights. It turned out they had coded something wrong in the trailer module. I haven't had much luck with anything in the programming department (i.e. sunroof not working then tailgate wouldn't lock and no lights in luggage compartment etc).

I'm not 100% sure I'm happy enough with the service in Brisbane to get my instrument cluster replaced yet.

It took about 3-4 weeks to get an instrument cluster in. I'd give your dealer a call, or email, and tell them the story maybe they'll become proactive and anticipate that you'll need a new cluster.

excellent news.. good to see they have accepted this as a problem!

I had the VW rep from head office look me in the eye and tell me stiff cheese, this is a 'feature' of the egg!! but anthony at waitara persisted and with "chrsibin"s info from the uk (and moonans dash info as well!) this work around was done.

i imagine somewhere a little guy is still working on a software fix

so the ultimate fix is: fit a next generation 05 or later dash or an older 04 dash, both fix the issue
