I have an Audi A4 with an RNS-E - a fantastic Nav/ Stereo system, which I retrofitted to my A4 in place of a SymphonyII stereo. Has anyone got thoughts on fitting one of these (electrically) to a Touareg. Is the Canbus the same betwen the two such that the electronics will recognise each other?
I know I would need to do something with the dash fascia, but before I tackle that bridge, I was wondering about the electronics?

This could be an interesting project.

Thanks for any advice.

Excellent query blackheathen. I'm going to replace the Symphony II in my Allroad with the RSN-E and for one thing -- they are VERY REASONABLY PRICED!

I think many of the electronics are shared across VW/Audi... I hope someone can tell us yea or nay.

Heres the mfd2 harness. Looks the same to me. I think this is something I will be doing soon if someone can tell me if they use the same coding....

as much as i would love an RSN-E in my Touareg
to make it work your going to have to shave down the face of it to make it fit

having info show up in the cluster kicks ass
but Audi parts are pricey
450 for XM
650 for bluetooth
no back up camera

DO THIS @ YOUR OWN RISK

removing the RSN-E faceplate . . .

1. turn the unit on, and place the screen in the 'open' position (screen flat). Keep it this way (so don't let it close it, turn the power off with screen flat)

2. remove the 3 black screws under the display. Yes, they are damn tight...Use a good screwdriver with the right fit. Don't use the small watchmaker screwdrivers. You can't get enough grip with these ones. Hold the screen when you remove the last screw

3. Take the screen carefully out of the rails. Release the flatcable connecter from your screen to the RNS-E. The screen is loose now.

4. remove the screws on the left and right side of the RNS-E (4 big screws on each side). Also remove the 2 smaller screws of the faceplate on the underside of the RNS-E

5. remove the plate on top of the RNS-E (the one with the RNS-E type# on it)

6. disconnect the flat cable (the one from the faceplate to the RNS-E) carefully

7. release/fold out the 2 clamps on the left and right side of the RNS-E

8. Take the faceplate off

To fix the plate: follow the procedure in reverse order.

Seems on the navplus.us forum people have done it in other VW/ Seats so it may be possible. Some of the key issues electrically would be interface to the DIS and AMP. I think I will give it a try. I have wiring schematics for both vehicles so will check out.
I would intend to fabricate a new fascia for the RNS-E rather than mess with the current one as it needs to be curved etc.
As for the reversing camera - at least one could use the aux input for the RNS-E. I have the TV (analog) and camera on the Touareg now so will see.
The electronics for the two are from completely different manulacturers, but one can only hope that they have spec'd the Canbus interface similarly. Could use a Canbus emulator - will see.
So if it works I could see a potential for an aftermarket fascia refit for the RNS-E for the Touareg!!!
As for the Pioneer etc - no ideas on comparison - just know that the Audi RNS-E is the best Nav system/ bluetooth system and music cartridge (SD cards) with such a good overall user interface it is hard to go past for me.
And the price is falling as the Audi market dries up! Brand new for $1200-$1300. See 'used' for less than $1000.
All thoughts are very welcome - especially from the experienced electronics/ canbus people.

i got my RSN-E from Scott & the multimedia kit & 2007 disk from Alex

i dont know much about the facelift treg any chance it will get some sort of vw RSN-Eish unit ?

it was pretty much plug & play in the B6 even thoe it was never offered at time of sale

Got a response on another forum re the RNS-E. Someone has done it successfully, so waiting for details. I'll link or post here when I do. Then its all ahead full steam on getting rid of the existing Touareg nav and inserting an Audi!!!
