Had a flat for the first time today. Called VW Roadside assistance and took about 2 hours to get a truck out. Figured they would know how to deal with the inflatable tire and since my flat was on the front (and the manual says only to put the inflatable spare on the rear tires) I didn't feel like changing two tires.

Tow Truck Shows Up, switches out the tires and I connect the air hose under the seat and to the spare and it inflates great... only the guy made me stop it at like 45PSI as he was afraid it was going to overinflate for some reason.

Drove the car home (two more miles) and the entire way I heard thumping so I thought maybe it needed more pressure.

Jacked the car back up (as to not put too much pressure on the inflation system). Connected the hose to the tire and under the seat again. Turned the vehicle on and nothing happened. Undid and reconnected about 20 times and each time nothing...once or twice I heard the compressor come on for about 20 seconds but with no air pressure at all.

Any thoughts? In fiddling around, I let the air back out of the tire, so now I have a jacked up Touareg with the spare tire on and not inflated and can't get the damn inflation system to work again.

That's only the case if you are going to use tire chains. Then the inflatable spare must go on the rear and tire chains would be mounted on the front tires only.

Otherwise, inflatable spare on the front without chains is OK.

If that's the case about front versus rear, would have saved some aggrevation (the manual does state it is meant for rear tires only though, in the changing a wheel section of the manual).

But my issue is getting the air compressor connector hose to work properly.

Did you lock the air suspesion before jacking up the car?
If not then the sensors pick up that the air suspension is at max travel. so the compressor will not switch on.
There is no point in jacking up the car as this will not change the pressure in the tyre and as such has no effect on the compressor that is pumping up the tyre.

Yes, the suspension was locked. Took the car into the dealer last week and they said the connector hose was not working properly. They tried one from another Touareg on the lot and it worked fine. They ordered me a new one that is apparently third generation design, from what I was told, so hopefully there will be no further problems.

Air suspension

Have you ever had it refuse to let you lower to "load Level", my 2 month old V6 TDi will allow it once and then recons the system is "filling", Bullshit as you can hear when the compressor is running, and mine just wont run, So then you select 4x4 height and only after a while you hear the Comp click in and the car raises, but slowely,, dare to select "extra height" as this just takes forever ?? is it just my T-Reg or does anyone have similar problems. I recon the comp is failing or overheating and tripping out. Oh so frustrating.. My T-Reg has been back to VW 4 times within its 6 weeks of e owning it, The battery died fully last week, "Oh we have this battery problem says VW". Think i need a new T-reg or settle for a new Compressor.. Andrew

I have forgotten that all doors need to be closed to lower to load height.
I have had the compressor run intermittently / trip out from over heating when reinflating all tyres and trailer tyres when rejoining tar roads after camping in Mozambique. I managed 4 tyres then had to drive 5-10 mins to let compressor cool down( as explained in the hand book).
My guess is a faulty compressor. I suppose that a small leak may cause the compressor to run more often and so be closer to it's 'overheating threshhold'
By the way the t-reg performed off road in the thick sand as well as my wife's disco 2 TD5 that we took on exactly the same trip a year previously.
But so much better on the road.

My hose was broken as well. They ordered me a new one under warranty. Sucks when you find that out on the side of the highway.
