We picked up our new Colorado Red V6 Luxury a couple of months ago and the car is great. We can't wait to get it offroad at Moreton and Fraser Islands.

We've only had a couple of minor issues to date - the sunroof has never worked (bad motor) and we've already had a CD stuck.

Since we only seem to have the MY05 models in Oz, I was wondering what other people's built dates are for their Touaregs? Our built date is Dec 04 (which seems a long time ago), but it's compliance plate is May 2006.

Given that the built date is Dec 04, should I ask the dealer to make sure that the TCM has the latest firmware? e.g. TSB 01-05-17.

Thanks
Scott.

You should, I always ask every service that they check for latest Flashes

Hi Scott. I have the same as you. That is, a v6 luxury with a build date of dec 04 and compliance plate of April 06!. I asked the same thing of my dealer re software updates and apparantly it is automatically done in the predelivery check. I asked why such a gap between body build and compliance plate date and got given the answer that not many shipments of Touaregs come to Australia so when a large shipment comes it lasts for quite some time. Apparantly the cars are held in bond at dealers sites rather than a central site and only get plated(compliance) when ready for sale. Apparantly all cars are on a data base and VW dealers sell from this Australia wide regardless whether they have it in local lot stock or not. Also of interest is the fact that in Victoria its legal to sell a car with a build date of 04 but compliance plated and registered in 06 as an 06 model. Laws are different in NSW where apparantly it must be classed as an 04 car

This is something that extends to other makes too. My parents recently bought an Alfa Romeo GT coupe and the build date and compliance were about 1-2years difference. Seems weird and the dealers don't see it as a problem of course!

Yet with my Touareg the difference is only 6 months or something like that?!

Beware of Build and Compliance dates. When you sell your car it will be a build date car. I never buy cars built earlier than the year of compliance, unless I get a substantial discount, as you will be disadvantaged on sale. If you don't believe this take your vehicle in to a dealer and they will quickly appraise it as a model by build date.

Your right if selling to a dealer / wholesaler or a knowledgable private car buyer. This is especially so if someone only keeps the car a couple of years as over time the impact diminishes and "clicks on the dial" come into play more. Selling a vehicle to the general public at large via a private sale hasnt ever seemed a problem to me although Ive never had as bigger gap in build date vs compliance date as I have here. Then again I got a damn good discount on the car (plus better than wholesale price on my trade in) so Im not concerned. Most people would never find a build date plate if they fell over it. Not that Im saying there is anything unscrupulous about selling by way of compliance plate / 1st registration rather than build date. In fact selling by way of the compliance date is the legal way of selling the date of model of the car in Victoria. Technically it would probably be in contravention of of the relevant legislation that holds the compliance plate date to be the model date of the vehicle if I tried to sell it with any other date than an "06 model"!!!

A dealer here in Vic actually told me tthat most cars with long build dates on them were actually shipped to Victoria as it was easier to advertise/ sell here as against NSW where I think the build date rather than compliance plate forms the model year.

.

there have been many shipments of eggs since dec 04, it just depends on the colors/features whether any particular egg is bought... bmw do the same thing you said regarding holding stock etc. my build date and comliance are only weeks apart, as is moonans i suspect, these were both shipped in 05 and two different shipments.

a great deal will balance out the date difference

Thanks for input guys. The build date didn't really concern me too much as long as I made sure I got an MY05 model. Like Clipper, I think we got a great discount on the new car (and a good trade-in on the old rex), so I can't complain.

The car's going into have its sunroof fixed next week, so I'll follow Bails advice and get them to check that all the flashes for the TCM etc. are up to date.

Well good discounts always make it worthwhile, one reason you always see big discounts on cars in the new year, selling cars plated the year before. I do know in the case of Motorcycles, BMW,that the compliance plate is added on leaving the compound,I've not purchased a new european car for a while now, choosing to buy well second hand if I can.

Glad to see some other dudes actually have bought an "old rag" like I did. Got mine this month July 07 and the compliance date was Feb 07 and the build date was Nov 04!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so beat that anyone?

OK I did get the rig for 70K drive away and it is a 3.2L luxury with sunroof and OEM towbar & I got the iPod connector thrown in so I am thinking I could never actually afford a genuine new rag way over my budget - in fact I had gone in to purchase the new Golf TSI but the sales guy happened to mention they had a couple of heavily discounted rags and .....

Anyway 2 gripes so far 1. Gutless 2. Thirsty ... apart from that I think the best 4WD in the world for the $$$

OK by gutless I mean this thing takes forever to kick down to a lower gear when you need it to move eg from 50K it just loves to shift up to higher gears really soon (think it is trying to save fuel)

Oh and in regard to fuel despite all its best efforts it really makes the stuff disappear fast unless you drive it softly softly - best I can get on a tank average is 13.4L/100K and that is lots of open road stuff and v gently city work.

So I am looking foward to getting it back to the dealer to see if all the auto and engine flashes have been updated like they are supposed to be pre-delivery but I am sure NOT given the crap responsiveness.

PS Have owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee 6cyl 4Ltr for last 5 years heaps of reliability issues but a more gutsy drive and it towed my 3000kg boat hope the rag can do that??

We bought an older one also! We just got our TReg on the 4th of July, we're loving it. We had couple of issues at the 1 week mark of ownership, so decided to get it looked at by a VW dealership. Glad we did! The dealership found out there were 4 open recalls on it. The VW Dealership took care of all of them no problem, no charge. Our build date was Aug 03! Compliance date? Hmmm... I don't know what that refers to. When did VW actually begin building the 2004s?

year of what?

Have just purchased an "07" from a dealer in Melbourne via the internet.
All information provided up to the actual conract said "07".
When the contract came for signing the build date was Aug06 and compliance Oct06.
When challenged the dealer said the model year is based on the vehicle's date of registration.
Like many of the comments already made, I feel as though the deal was a good one so cannot complain too loudly.
The vehicle is due to arrive in Perth next week, so the proof of pudding etc. etc..........
Colin.

Did you know? (according to the ATO)
if a car is bought over two years following the vehicle compliance date you are exempt of paying Luxury Car Tax.
