I'm buying a new car for work and I sepnd a good bit of time onthe road. Say 30K a year on average. I was planning to buy the Passat TDI until I drove the Touareg TDI and fell in loave with it. Mileage at 38 highway is good and the dealer said he sees customers getting 30 + on a regualr basis.

I'm a bit concerned about the Touareg maintenance costs and also how well it will hold up over a four or five year period of ownership.

For you TDI owners, what have you experienced?

Regards,

Matthew

I have two close friends that drive Passat TDI's. You can't beat it for a commuter car...mid 40's consistently, cheaper to buy, and cheaper to maintain. Don't get me wrong, I love my Touareg, but I wouldn't get one to use as a commuter car.

You also might want to throw the MB GLK 250 B/T into that mix also. All three are figuratively to LITERALLY different animals, albeit all three are diesels.

There is no doubt that non diesel costs are more to far more than the VW Passat TDI. So the best way to think of all this is using your data or the cost over 5 years or 150,000 miles.

So for example, the 10,000 miles oil change. Passat TDI takes a tad less than 5 L, Touareg a tad less than 9 L. 15 oil changes will consume 60 L's more. @ 9 per L that pencils in $540 more over 150k miles.

Now THAT'S a serious scientist! A real world, real time, real comparison!

Very good point. Maintenance on the Touareg will obviously be more.

With the Treg, everything will cost more. Brakes, tires, oil, fuel consuption etc.

You have to compare orange with orange. The Treg vs another SUV and the Passat with another car of the same category.

The first thing to do is to make a good evaluation of your real needs.

I own both and like them very much for what they are (car for a car and a SUV for an SUV and this one, especially to pull my travel trailer)

We have both. First we got the wife's 2013 Passat TDI SEL. I fell in love with it and picked up a Treg TDI.

If you commute, in the long run the Passat will save you money. I took my wife's Passat TDI from Clearwater, to Miami, and back, and my AVG MPG was 48 (doing the speed limit and using cruise). Which blew me away for such a big roomy sedan.

The Treg will be much more comfortable, but you are going to spend more (higher price, tires, brakes and diesel). I went with the Treg because I need an SUV.

If you commute a lot, my recommendation is a Passat. If you want the toys, get the SEL model.
