I do not have an auto setting in my headlights.
There is no auto headlight feature on my 2005 and I suspect none on the 2006. The 2004 was a giant VW experiment, so it probably got that feature plus everything else standardized that was no longer standard on later models.
You two should be embarrassed...

...and I mean that in the most sincere way. :)

It's funny, when we got the treg, I told my wife it had the auto headlights. But we lived in an apartment complex with a parking garage. So never used the lights. Then I forgot about them. So I am embarrassed... But I am still driving the best cot treg EVER.
Just reinforces why this car is so special. The hidden secrets that just continue to create enough intirigue for owners years later.

- Touareg Secret #21: Even when I was warming the cabin, the vent in the glove box was still cooling. I find this very strange. I would have figured that the vent was connected to the regular ventilation system and would blow air based on the temperature the passengers were calling for. But somehow, VW is putting cool air in the glove box in the winter and summer, regardless of whether you are using the A/C or heating system. Not sure that I care for this added level of complexity. It's a wine chiller !
My 99 Passat does this and that car has old fashioned manual heat/air controls. It's probably not done in a complicated way. More likely an ingenious way.

You're much more generous than I.

To me, these "mysteries" that continue to arise because they are either not documented or documented poorly are a sign of a poor product.

That people should have to visit various fanatic forums on the car to learn how it works is a little ridiculous.

Don't misunderstand me. I'm thankful for this place, the people, and the knowledge shared here. I've learned a ton. Without it, we'd REALLY be a in pickle.

p.s. - I love driving my T3. The ride is amazing. Almost every other facet is a disappointment. The sound system is HORRIFIC. I'm not a sound gear fanatic, but I do listen to music 24/7. It is pitiful that my 2007 Rabbit has better sound by far. I don't need audiophile quality, just something that doesn't wear on me so much.

Jason,
I have found almost every one of the "secrets" documented in my owners manual and many features have been in some of my other German cars. The manual is certainly dry reading and a bit challenging to figure which optional equipment you need to reference but in the end very complete.
Many people find it easier to ask then search the hundreds of pages of print. I guess that's OK. I went through my manual page by page when it was first delivered as part of the excitement of the new acquisition yet I still sometimes find it difficult to locate something I know I read before.
My experience with Germans in the auto industry is that they are obsessive about getting ALL the details documented.
Replies that just suggested "read the manual" wouldn't make for much of a forum discussion though.

Definitely not on my 2004MY.

My mechanic proved to me that one can lock themselves out of the Touareg if not entering the car from the driver door after unlocking the car. Had no clue (and for this I am ashamed....just yank my Ownership card from me [hangs head]).
Not all Touaregs. If you have keyless entry, it's impossible to lock yourself out.

I am willing to admit, I have locked myself out, with keyless entry...

Keys were set just inside the tailgate and someone pushed the lock button on the door handle. Wife brought the spare, and let me in.
I just tried it and it is indeed impossible to lock the key inside my Touareg. Here is a video clip:

Looked out? - YouTube

When the key is left in the cup holder and you press the blcak button on the door handle the Touareg does not lock.
