So, I traded in my Chevy Suburban 2500 and purchased my Touareg on a Thursday evening 3 weeks ago. Payments were way too high and there was no need for that truck anymore since I don't have a need to pull a trailer anymore. Anyway, that Saturday morning, my friend and I were on our way to get some lunch, when out of nowhere this girl pulls out of a parking lot and drives right into the side of us, knocking us sideways in the road... but luckily I was able to quickly correct and saved us from going all the way around. She hit us hard enough to splash my red bull in the cupholder on the LF window and windshield (and all points in between...) and I couldn't believe the airbags didnt go off and windows didnt shatter. It also knocked the right headlight out, even though she didn't hit us in the front.

Anyway we got pulled off the road and I got to inspect the damage... There are 3 little scuffs on the RR door, the plastic trim has two deep ruts in it from the license plate screws, the RR wheel is all kinds of scuffed up. The alignment was not affected, and the total repair estimate came to about $500. This thing is a tank.

Now it gets better. I've owned two VW's both bought from the same dealership. The first was an 07 Jetta that the day after I bought it my (now ex) wife took it out of the garage to take it for a spin, and when she returned she simply parked it in the driveway. She came in, woke me up (I worked night shift at that time), and said "Good choice. Your car is really nice." I think I grumbled something and went back to sleep, only to be awakened a few seconds later to a loud noise. I climb out of bed and stumble outside to find her hysterical at the bottom of the steps. She tried her best to keep me away from the driveway, but I already knew... I round the corner to see her Jeep sitting about halfway up the hood with the back wheels off the ground. You see, my car is usually parked in the garage, so she never looks when she's backing up (don't get me started on this one). Total repair bill: $11,450. The picture is the only one I have left, from the body shop when they were halfway done completing repairs. The others were on a laptop she threw at my head... Yeah... Anyway, we had separate insurance policies at that time still and her insurance company refused to pay it for some unknown reason, but I know mine sued the bajeebus out of them... So my premiums only went up for a few months. But first that, now this, 2 VW's, same dealership... I'm seeing a pattern here...

Agreed. Like I said, I expected major damage. It didn't even flinch lol.

Yeah, I locked her out of the house and started packing that day. And I've gotta say, my luck's greatly improved ever since :)

What size are your GY triple tred assurances, and how do you like them?

You got very lucky... first with the ex wife /divorce, and second, with the gal that barely clipped you... really, really luck.

Backing up without looking is sheer stupidity, even with a backup camera.

They seem to be a decent tire. I haven't had one issue with traction yet on dirt roads and ice/snow. My biggest complaint is they're noisy. My LR is developing a tiny bulge but since there's still a good bit of life left in them I'm going to watch it and if it gets any bigger I'm going to swap them for some michelins, which IMHO are the best tires you can get.

Agreed and agreed. She's now off making someone else's life miserable and I now own my own business and drive a luxury tank. But at the same time, everything that's good right now came with major hardship and day to day life is still challenging, but I'm happy and I'm comfortable in life and really what more could you want.

I am EXTREMELY happy with my Michelin Latitude Cross tires in 235/65/17.

VERY quiet with excellent on and off road manners and grip, and they look like they'll do about 36K before being discarded at 50% worn.

50% is the starting point for their performance to start to degrade. They are no longer performing as well as they could be, and to the ultra-enthusiast that's just purely unacceptable

Unlike 99.9% of other owners my car is off road every day.

Never mind the blasted inconvenience of having to walk back for a tow, I'd look bloody silly if I got stuck in a wet field or a bit of woodland mud!

Also, we get a fair bit of rain and I like to see clear wheel marks in my mirror when driving on soaking wet roads. If I don't, then I slow down until I do.

Running a 2.5 ton car [or any car in fact] on tires with less than 4mm of tread just doesn't appeal to me.

But if you don't need the off road grip, or you live somewhere where it doesn't rain, then fine, use a bit more tread but don't expect the car to perform at it's best if you get caught out by adverse conditions.

Phoenix, that was so tasteless it could've been some of my ex-wife's cooking LOL

TP, as a fellow So Cal VW dub nut, and a rare and endangered species as a native here... my advice would be to venture out on our roadways here only on dry days, and if it rains, park the 'reg until you can sport some wheels with a little more meat on the treads. It's been a dry winter so far, but that can change in a day, when the rain comes in the OC, it can come in buckets, big ones.

Lemme know what you're thinking for skins on those 18" Factory Manhattans, maybe we can find some used for cheap that aren't full pop in price, until you get some solid work and paychecks under your belt.

Yes you can see all of Lincoln's head ( said john wilks booth)
Just got it - very good!

There's THREE [albeit tenuous] car connections there: Lincoln [1] got shot in Ford's [2] Theatre [not bad given that the car wasn't invented for another 30 years!] and the Wilks [3] brothers designed the original Land Rover by drawing it in the sand on a beach in Wales 80 years later!

As for those tires, I'm with Niner.

If you do get heavy rain you'll be pushing your luck and I don't like all those cracks in the rubber.

What was the date of manufacture? It's on the outside wall of your tires.

If you get caught in rain, check your mirror from time to time.

If you can see your wheel tracks behind, fine.

If not slow down until you can.

Regarding rain and AT tires, I drove with almost bald Generals thru hours of torrental rains here in MD a few weeks ago. 75 MpH on i95. Dead of night. Went through several ponds in the roadway and the car did not flinch/shutter/shift/spin/lose control once. Reg sliced right through them all. So heavy rains be dammed when a Touareg is concerned.

Of course, always practice safe driving.

I stand by my tip - if you can't see your wheel marks in the water in your mirror you're at risk of aquaplaning, Touareg or no Touareg.

Tank tracks FTW

Turn up the volume . . . .

As a reaction to the OP - If I had a Jetta, I'd be happy with anything driving over it, the harder, the better. Keep it real, the Touareg is a nice vehicle because it is so un-VW. The rest of their line-up is what the name suggests...
