Hey guys, my 2005 Touareg is going crazy. The blinkers to be specific.
When I blink left, the blinker operates correctly. When I blink right, it blinks once or twice and then switches over to the left side (lever still in the right blink position). This does not happen when I do the quick touch, it blinks 3 times in the correct direction.

No luck running a quick search.

Little back ground incase it matters:
About 2 years ago I replaced the trailer hitch electrical module that controls the lights. I pulled the fuse for it. But no luck, still have the same problem.

I can say that in the past, in my Mk 4 jetta, the turn indicator on the steering stalk needed replacing, not the relay. YMMV, keep it in mind as a consideration.

I went ahead and cleaned the blinker lever electrical connections with QD Electronic Cleaner. Some guys on the Audi forum have done this. And so far it seems to work.
I only removed the cover and used the thin pipe that comes with the spray can to get in there to clean it.

You can try a squirt of electrical contact cleaner in the steering wheel winker unit - worked for me otherwise you need a new winker switch which, from memory, would be about $200 or so.

It's a bloody dangerous fault. I indicated to overtake a car, did not realise the winkers were doing the exact opposite of what I intended to signal and couldn't understand why the stupid Mercedes driver behind me had pulled out to overtake ME!

Of course what HE had seen was me indicating to the nearside - a signal for him to overtake me It was a very near miss!!

Wow, I am glad you came out of the situation unscathed!

The Touareg is my wives car so I was pretty nervous about letting her drive like this. I did use the electrical cleaner and so far it is working.

It bothered me it might revert to being faulty so for quite a long time I used to put the winkers on slightly earlier than I might have done and then checked they hadn't suddenly gone back to indicating incorrectly by looking at the repeater winker in the relevant door mirror to make sure the signal being given was still what I wanted.

I've done another 50K since the problem!

Good. Thanks for reporting back. Lots of people ask for, and get, advice but then don't tell us if it worked or not!!

Hello "Meant to buy an X5"

There is a TORX screw on the steering column that holds a plastic cover in place.
Rotate the steering wheel till you expose the screw. Remove the screw and the cover will come right off.
I never disassembled the column to get to the mechanics.
I bought a can of QD Electronic Cleaner and just sprayed it in to the openings to flush it out.
I got it clean enough to get it working again.

I had to change the whole turn indicator / cruise control stalk on my 2002 mk 4 jetta tdi. Thought it was the hazard relay too, but it's not the case.

Keep an eye on the repeater blinkers in the door mirrors each time you use the indicator arm to make certain it continues giving the correct indication.

Glad you're sorted - but do keep an eye on the door mirror blinkers for a few days to make sure the rest of the blinkers are doing exactly what they should!
