Oops my bad mine didn't have 30k more like 43k when they did the shocks. Speed bumps also did not cause the noise, or regular dips in the road. Rough concrete, cracks in the road, and backing down my steep driveway caused the noise. Otherwise quiet, and perfect.

The noise seems to be right-rear. They replaced the right-rear strut on the last go-around, no change in the problem. I've owned a LOT of cars and none has had this problem except this Touareg which except for this I love. It's not my imagination. Grrr...

I told them to ignore all other rattles and squeaks for now (and there are a couple). I want this specific problem found and fixed.

I would be pissed if they only did one! They should always be replaced in pairs! My dealer is great, and they deal with a lot of Touaregs, and Phaetons. They also have VW certified master techs on hand. Not all dealers are equal. Maybe get a 2nd opinion at another. My noise was not noticeable with the radio on, but driving down low or off it was annoying. I feel your pain! Hope you get it sorted!

I lost it today. I'm done with the dealer on this issue. I'll take it to someone else and pay to have the problem found & fixed, and present the bill to VWoA. They will probably refuse to reimburse me.

Mileage In: 10108
Mileage Out: 10110
Distance from dealer to the potholed road I told them to drive it on: ~2 miles
I authorized them to let a tech drive it home overnight. Tech must live at the dealer.

"Gosh we had 2 techs drive it and they can't hear anything wrong"

EDIT: The 2013 Jetta TDI seems to have no engine temperature gauge. WTH??!!

Eugene, although it sounds like your clunking noise is more pronounced than what I had and does seems like you've tried everything, have you tried stuffing your spare wheel compartment?
I stuffed my spare wheel compartment with an old sheet leaving no room at all, could barley close the compartment's lid and eliminated any space for echoing. I can't say it's all gone, but significantly diminished to a point I barley notice it. And I am very sensitive to sounds.
First few times I drove my 13 TDI this right rear muffled clunk drove me crazy. If yours is accompanied with a rattle then maybe something else is involved. I attribute mine to what I unfortunately hate to admit about VW, and that is with all this fine precision German engineering, there are just some details that the "people's car" manufacturer is not paying attention to. From the engineering stand point all the way down to the QA test driver off the production line that can hear this clunking noise, but just cares... less.

I had the same noise on a test drive I went on in Franklin(Boucher?) the place Fincher bought his. Then went to Chicago and bought a used one and with all the CT insights looked for the rattle and shakes before I bought. I feel for ya man good luck with this. Mine sounded like a brake issue, I have not read all the previouse posts.

I didn't try stuffing the spare wheel compartment. But I did put 2 layers of Dynamat under the cargo floor. No change in the target issue but does slightly reduce general road noise and AdBlue sloshing.
Hey, Dave. I had the rattling/creaking noise from rear of the vehicle. My vehicle 13 VR6. Basically at slow speed over rough road surface, Rattling noise from rear of vehicle. Drove me crazy. Try duplicate the noise by having someone in the trunk, fold the rear seat down, remove rear trunk mat and cargo cover. Put your hand on top of the rear strut, if you hear rattle noise from there. U are half way there. VW has new/updated rear upper strut mount bushing, the old style is make out of hard rubber bushing. New style is much softer foam bushing. Hope that help you.

I'd be very interested if that solves Eugene's problem. And if it does I'll be on my way to the dealership myself. Question is, why only from the right side?
In my case and also others reported the noise coming from the right, is there a difference in the bushing assembly between sides?

Eugene, please post you're progress with this when you can.

for some reason my left side was louder than right side. it all depends on the bushing itself. when i saw the new style bushing myself, i understood why VW release new updated style bushing. totally different material, different design, much softer compound. lmk

Also considering the JGC CDI has been delayed for over 18 months in the USA does not make me feel good either. There is something seriously wrong with the vehicle and I feel bad for anyone getting the first batch.

Having owned (2) of the new JGC's, I would not buy one again. The build quality and defects are rampant for modern cars.

Should anyone be suprised that GM,fiat and chrysler put out a deffective product? There is no comparing these two vehicles. Have you all heard about the new Fiat 500,horrible quality reports, and this is a simple car.
