About 3 months ago my rear hatch glass would randomly unlock (but not open up) while stopped at a traffic light. I could jump out and secure it but it would just unlock again. I think for safety programing kept it from un-latching while the truck was moving.

Took it to dealer who, of course, could find nothing wrong.
But now this is where it gets interesting...I think they disabled it because the issue stopped along with not being able to open the glass at all.

Fast forward to today I tore into replacing the struts and figured I resolve the glass issue too. Being that it always raining here I figured it could be a worn wire/wet wire issue but they are all in great shape, tested the switch and it looks to work (ohm meter)

So Help: Does anyone know what I need to change back with a VAG-COM to re-enble? Even if the original issue returns at least I can open the glass and move on to fixing it. Or is it possible this is an electronics issue and not mechanical.

TIA

The micro-switch under the small rubber button is a known point of failure as is a break in the wiring up by the tailgate hinges.

It's not a VCDS item as far as I know so your failure point will most probably be one of the two items above.

Some people with better electronics skills have replaced just the micro-switch but the VW part is the complete black plastic triangular section.

The hardest part of replacing that is getting the wiper arm off!

I had to saw through mine so I needed a new arm and through the glass shaft as well.

I have a rear window problem as well in that it stopped opening. No click-whir sound, no unlocking. The "good" news is it remains secure and closed. I will inspect the wiring, but as my 04 remains under the platinum warranty I think it will be a job for the service tech. Unless someone has a "Eureka Moment" and can tell me how to fix it in a few minutes that is...

Leave it to service.

Right now I have my whole rear hatch torn apart to trying to fix this glass not opening. Switch tests ok, wiring OK-no broken wires, it just does not work.

All fuses OK but I have not found one that is specified for the rear hatch. Anyone know which one?

Found the problem! These breaks were back inside above headliner. The wires on the hinges exposed to the elements were fine but once I pulled the headliner down and got into were the gas struts are I found 3 wires and the washer tubing broken.

Was it getting a little wet back there when you used the washer?

The broken washer tubing is a well known fault usually caused by inadequate strength screen wash and the line freezing whereupon someone uses the rear wash wipe.

So top up the washer bottle in good time before the cold weather sets in.

That's bad. Lucky it hasn't shorted out ...

It had shorted out. The hatch would just un-latch a couple of dozen times as I drove it (not my DD) but only when not moving. So I would come up to a light and it would just sit there "firing" the release until started moving again then one day it all stopped working.

PITA to get in there and fix but worth it to have hatch usable again.
