Hi all. I have a 2012 TDI LUX with 16,500 miles. Love it except for the fact that my Pirelli Scorpion Verde's are showing significant tire wear. I will likely get less than 20k on them before replacement (and they produce a lot of road noise). Alignment is fine. I rotate every 5k and keep pressures 2lbs above sticker as recommended by my VW dealer. Are others experiencing this level of wear/miles? I had an 08 X5 before this and was averaging 25k miles on a set of tires with that in similar driving conditions. The manager at our local tire warehouse told me that he wasn't surprised as Pirelli sells lower quality (softer rubber) tires to Vw and other OEM. Now I have heard this before but chocked it up to rumor mill until this experience.

I would like to hear from other t3 owners as to if they experiencing similar wear and from those that have had better luck with tires, what brand?

2.5 Ton SUV driven like a sports car. 20,000 miles sounds about right.

Your experiences mimic what others are getting the with the Scorpions.

Follow this thread:

http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f44/265-50r19-recommendations-79962.html for more information on tires. There's a lot in there, but there's a lot of unhappy Scorpion owners in there as well.

Here's another thread, with more about the Scorpions:

Like it or not, you've got to start over with something else. You're free to do what you want, but there was NO way I was putting Scorpions back on our truck. I could deal with the wear. I could NOT deal with the noise. They were the noisiest tires I have ever owned on any vehcile, PERIOD. I put Toyo Versados on at around 20K, and they have been GREAT tires, even in the snow, even though they are all seasons.

I bet that yours are also wearing excessively in the middle, aren't they? Don't worry, that's NOT because you have them over inflated. I ran mine at the recommended pressure, and mine still wore in the middle. THE TIRES SUCK...

I get up to 30K out of my tires and never rotate - they all wear nice and evenly.

How often do you rotate? I have been doing a cross rotation every 5k.
If you're asking me then I have not rotated them and probably never will for several reasons;

1- My spacers are balanced with the wheels.
2- on German cars rear camber is much more aggressive then the front and once they develop patterns I'd rather have keep it that way.

This may be irrelevant but BMW advises against tire rotation for reason #2.

Wanted to kick this thread back to the top. Have 34,500 miles on the OEM Goodyears on my 2011 TDI exec. Given the experiences of others, happy with this. Now it's time to replace them. Continental DWS or Michelin Latitude Tours? Of note, I had the dreaded steering wheel shake until the first tire rotation but not since then.

T-reguan, what size spacers are you using, and what brand? I had spacers on my FX35 and I liked the more aggressive stance, but I also ran into problems with Les Schwab when it came to balancing new tires. The type of spacers that I had were the type that bolt to the hub and the wheel bolts to spacer. Also, have you had the "Touareg shake" yet??

I'm in the same boat with my 2011 TDI Exec. I think the OEM Goodyears have 6 or 7K more to go max (only 14K on them now). But...I jumped around quite a bit in some heavy rain and I'll be pulling a heavy boat soon so I'm going to replace them now and not wait until Fall. I'm leaning towards the Continental DWS... I'm hoping not to have to get separate snow tires like I did with my Jeep GC.

Pl. post as to what you decide.

While I love the look of the GYs, I got just over 20k. Now have Conti DWS. So far, so good.

My 2012 TDI Lux just hit 20K miles, could last another 5K but got very noisy. Also, I scratched 2 of my wheels badly....misjudged the distance between two rocks. Good excuse to buy new wheels and tires. Moving up to 20 inch.

The tire and wheel combo from Tire Rack including TPMS was not much more for 20 inch than 19 inch tires alone. Bought Yokohama Prada Spec X....good reviews.

I will ask my dealer to do an alignment check and torque to 133. I will keep you posted on how they ride and wear.

2011 TDI Michelin Latitude Tour HP 265/50R19XL (N0, 110V) tire wear update

I installed Michelin Latitude Tour HP 265/50R19XL (N0, 110V) tires on my 2011 TDI to replace the worn out, noisy (like bad wheel bearings) Pirelli Scorpion Verdes with only 26,000 miles on them.Dead Horse

I just measured remaining tread depth at 7/32", flat across all four with 22,900 miles on them. The calculated total mileage estimate is in the table below:

Wear limit in 32s Total miles to limit
4 ............................ 45,800
3 ............................ 53,433
2 (wear bars) ......... 61,067

Michelin tread life warranty is 6-years / 55,000 miles, looks like I won't be able to make a mileage warranty claim. :cool:

No abnormal wear, all very flat and quiet.:D I use a combination of front to back, side to side and cross rotation to put each tire at each corner for equal miles. I don't know if the Michelins need this to wear evenly but the Scorpions sure could have used it.

@OP:

I assume that you’ve confirmed the wheel alignment accurate settings within specs with the professionals. Thus you have all rights to blame OE tire quality. Surprising is that such highly-respected tire company sells such junky quality products…

My OE tires are Goodyear Eagle LS2. I am currently at 22K miles and have 6/32”+ left on all four tires. I’ve recently noticed (with the caliper) that the tire’s outer edges are a bit more worn than inner ones – but it is ~ 1/64” difference. All four tires are worn exactly the same. Rotation was done at 5K, 10K and 20K in a pattern recommended by the VW. The ride is smooth and quiet (crossing my fingers with that statement). I do plenty of towing. I plan to drive another 3-5K miles or so before replacing GY LS2s at the end of October or in early November (and doing proper wheel alignment). I never keep tires with less than 5/32” for winter driving in Minnesota. The GY LS2s are far from calling them excellent – especially for winter driving – but they do the job well enough and for milder climates I would probably be able to “squeeze” 35K-40K miles out of them even with my agile style of driving.

Hope this helps.

P.S. As far as high praising of Michelin Latitude Tour HPs goes – I cannot attest if they are any better than GY LS2s.
