Hi i find the sport suspension of a 12 touareg to be too sensitive over small bumps or variations in the road. Kinda feels jerky almost. My old skoda octavia jump around a lot but over these tinier bumps it just goes right over. So the sport suspension in the touareg is more sensitive. Runs great on even roads but all other it kind of annoys me.

Can I simply buy the standard shocks and install them or is there more to it that makes the suspension "sport"?

Please help me out.

I've already lowered the tire pressure, that helped but not enough. :-/

I want a smooth ride.

What size are your wheels and tyres?

Before you buy any OEM suspension parts go to the dealer and test drive one with the different suspension.

I don't notice a huge difference between the Sport and Lux with different suspension codes.

Air suspension is great but not really a good retrofit idea

Yeah I'll try to test drive other cars today too see if it's in my head.

The wheels are 19".

On roads that have small variations like a wash board feels quite annoying as the car reasons to each up and down in the road. While in the skoda I simply didn't notice.

X2^^

A nice set of 17" rims with some decent sidewall height on the tires will seriously improve comfort.
Big rims with low profile tires sacrifice a lot of comfort for a potential increase in high speed performance.

I am with the poster of MSG #5 on this one ! 19 in and 20 in, as is being documented on this web site have their "issues". I have the 18 in OEM sized 255/55 and am getting surprisingly nice wear and RIDE (nexus with the OP's original topic) AND that is on roads acknowledge to be some of the worse in the US. So because you are in Sweden, I am unqualified to really compare and contrast. However, changing some to all of the suspension would be a real mistake and costly. Now that does not keep me from thinking a 17 oem tire size would be a lot better, but i am sure there might be fitment and other issues.

(long post, from a frustrated, yet somewhat happy Touareg owner)

The VW dealer I bought it from yesterday..., told me they can take the car back, for a replacement car of any kind, cheaper or more expensive. That's quite a nice gesture as they understand my issue, because I was pretty clear before buying it that I wanted a smooth ride. Now, the rest ride I did, was obviously not thorough enough and not on bad roads. I've learnt my lesson.

Switching to 17-18" wheels probably will help a lot. The VW dealer sadly didn't have any wheels I could try out, because I'm not sure I want to spend the money and then possible change car completely anyways you know.

Now, I've ridden it a bit more and I can manage, but it's not the car I wanted. And I think that will eat me from the inside.

The deal I have is that I can within 10 days switch the car out to any other. The bad thing, it's only within their dealership (that specific spot). They currently have 2 touerags coming in, but they're they're quite a bit more money. My main cause for changing cars was to reduce the monthly payment.

So you guys have the sport suspension (non air)? What tire sizes and how do you feel it performs over rugged asphalt?

The main issue really is the side to side jerking. Our "old" (08) skoda octavia also jerks and makes lots more noise, but it jerks in a forward motion rather than left to right as the touareg does. You know what I mean? Two quite different ways of "shaking" and moving around. Sadly, the side to side is very annoying for me.

Is this not happening on the touareg with air or standard??

Apart from this, the car is great! Two kids 2 and 3, wifey, we ride great. On even roads. After that, mainly I am the one complaining, but I know the wife kinda holds it in a bit to make me happy :) cute, but she's a liar, haha.

VW checked on replacing the sport suspension and they said it was 35.000 sek. Now that's around 6000 US dollars or so. NOT worth it...! But I still want a smoother ride. Oh what to do...

Just as the seller agrees with, I should be 100% happy. And I am not. =/

Btw, found a 4G modem installed in the rear compartment. That was cool, apparently a campaign feature VW did some time ago. it's installed professionally. I was wondering why I got a WiFi network everywhere I drove. haha... :) Just got to get my own sim card for it.

A pic of the car! 17's or 18' will be kinda small... But if it improves the ride over bumpy roads (with many small uneven patches of asphalt), then I'll settle with that solution.

The size is 265/50-19. Bridgestone Dueler H/P sport.

How do I find out if these have hard walls or will cause a stiff ride?

No fitment issues with any 17" OEM VW Touareg rims, was stock fitment for years, they just don't fit on V10s.
For fall winter and spring I run 17" Canyons with stock size 235/65-17 Nokian WR G2 SUVs ( this size allows use of tire chains front and rear) Awesome rain and snow tire, good wear and very comfortable ride, handling at highway speed is brilliant too.

Fit 17 inch wheels with 235/65/17 or 255/60/17 Michelin Latitude Tours for the summer and run them at the maker's pressures. The overall wheel/tyre diameter will be the same as the 19s, but the greater depth on the sidewall and the Michelins themselves should provide a noticeable difference.

What about the springs and dampers though. I mean, sport springs as far as I know, are meant to be harder at the initial, first, bounce. Not sure how to explain it in english sorry :)

So small changes will transfer quicker into the chassi. And that is pretty much what I feel, and that I don't like.

Surely 17-18" with soft edge tires will reduce the effects of the sporty springs.

But how I sense it, I don't know if it will rid what annoys me, the side to side jerking. This side to side jerking happens upon one wheel going up over a bump, while the other stays planted. Withs softer tires, the swaying probably would just happen for longer, but still happen because that's how the springs want to work.

Or am I overthinking it here!??

The most comfortable ride I experienced is with the Nokian WR tires on 255/55 R18.

How many miles do you have? I feel like the ride improves on all these Touaregs after the first few thousand miles and everything has worn in a little bit.

Thanks

It's over 70000km, 45k miles, ...so that's not it. :)

Tomorrow I'm deciding what to do. Got to resolve this matter. Either live with it or return the car. But since they don't have any other cars of interest I kinda don't have any other options but keeping it.

A random thought: on some new cars there is packing in the springs for transportation [no, I don't know why either!] and just occasionally the dealer forgets to remove it.

I don't know if Touareg springs are packed or not, but just check that your springs don't have anything like that in them that could impede performance.

But if you're not happy with the car then I'd get rid of it.

Hmmmm, I've got the steel factory sport suspension package on my '12 TDI and I can't say I've ever noticed the side to side jerking that you describe.... I'm at 30,000km, and the ride is just like it was new, firm and well planted, but not harsh.

What's your tire brand, model and sizes?

What came on the car from VW new with the sport package, 20" Pikes Peak rims and 275/45-20 Goodyear Eagles.

Oh! Dang, and you don't feel it being an issue, then I'm just too sensitive. I'll clip of the weiner and trade it in for a p*ssy.

I just wonder if at 70,000km there is another issue?

Found my old touareg v8 tdi on sale and I'm going to test drive it later today. It has air suspension and 19". Will be interesting how I feel that car rides.

I must say though that after a few days of riding my own current touareg and starting to get used to how it rides, I don't seem to bother as much anymore.
