If a car has the shakes, how do you get rid of it?

Thx!
Catch the plane home!

You need to spend some time doing your homework on here!!

Some have been fixed by re-balancing the wheels.

Some by re-torquing the wheels to 133 ft lbs.

A few by fitting Michelin Latitude Tour tires.

Some not at all thereby starting ther Lemon process leading to buy back.

And, I strongly suspect, some have simply been sold by their fed up former owners who've given up on VW not being able to find a universal fix and issue a TSB.

Personally, if I drove a T3 and it had the shakes I'd simply walk away. Why take the risk it can't be fixed?

/\ This is true as the day is long. Some of them are indeed buy backs, VW then auctions them off to get them lost in the system of used cars. Caveat Emptor

The used car business is chock full of shady deals and bones in the closet.

It should also be noted that the T3's with the least amount of shakes issues are those with Sport packages that come with the 18" rims.

From my observations, the most shakes come in the 19" and 20" models, the ones the OP is looking at. YMMV, do your own research to confirm or deny my observations as correct or incorrect.

Golly, we've agreed again. This is worrying!!:D

OK, I did it, I made a deal on a 2013 TDI LUX which is Black on Brown!! :)

The deal is $50,200.00 from the VW dealer 27 miles away! I think this is a VERY GOOD price from what I've seen across the country on Autotrader or on Cars.com.

Wait, there is more! :D

What clinched the deal today was when the salesman (Staas) happened to mention that he needed to get the roof replaced on his home (he saw my truck which has my company logo etc) . I asked him where he was in the process and he said he had already received his insurance claim paper work and his 1st check but hadn't hired a contractor yet

I told Staas, "If you will let me perform the work on your claim, I will buy the Touareg!"

He said, "Are you serious?"

I answered, "Yes"

So, we drove the Treg over to his house where we picked up a copy of his claim paperwork.

We spent the next hour going over the details of the work we would perform on his house and then we drove back to the dealership and I gave him a $500 deposit on the car!

He has the day off tomorrow so we agreed to meet again Thursday at noon to pickup the car etc.

I am very happy - I am in love with the black on brown (today was the first time I saw this combo) and I feel the $50.2k for a 13 LUX TDI is a very good price, not to mention it comes with our "gentlemen's agreement" for my company to perform the insurance work on his home, which is around $11k worth of revenue for my company!!

How do you like them apples!! :joy:

Here are a couple quick pics I snapped today at the dealership:

Smart move.... but again.... for the record... he saw your WORK TRUCK.... and there is a clear association between a roofing business and a work truck.

Enjoy your new ride, keep the tires fresh, they won't make a year.

For local, you did very good on price. That's probably very close to a 56K MSRP that you knocked down nicely.

Actually, it doesn't work quite that way, but it is agreat deal neverless! Since it is a SUV Section 179 is 1/2 of purchase price (up to $25k max). So, I get $25k section 179 plus 1st year bonus depreciation which is 1/2 of the remainder. Then you get to depreciate the remaining remainder over three years. Total write-off will be 25k + 12.5k + 4.1k = $41.6k. However, it is a deduction (not credit), which will save me $41.6k times my effective tax rate. So, my taxes will be reduced by a nice chunk! The tax savings will at least pay for the TREG's 1st year vehicle loss in value!

So you really bought the truck for $39,200 less $25k on a first year tax write off comes to a grand total of a whopping $14,000! :) Excellent!

Congrats, glad you finally got a deal done!

Great color combo.

Touareg tax credits are nice :)

Related - a guy stopped me today and asked about my TDI. He was considering trading his wife's X5 for a Touareg as well. Nice to see movement in the T-Reg direction.

Congratulations! You are a sensible man to pick up the best deal for an excellent price! Having a smile on your face every morning when you get in the Touareg driver's seat is worth much more than tax savings... We have to love ourselves - live is short! And she is a beauty!:D

Thanks for everyone's help here - everyone has been extremely informative and helpful!

This is proving to be a wonderful forum for a great car!

PS - The one thing I forgot (D'oh!!) is to test for the 60 MPH steering wheel shake - I will test it tomorrow or Thursday when I go to pick it up.

Test it at 70 mph, it may not show at 60 mph. Have them hand torque the lugs with wheels off the ground to 133 ft lbs if it has the shakes. If that doesn't fix it, then road force balance all the tires, or get a set of Michelins instead of Goodyears or Pirellis.

OK, after listening to advise from several fronts, my son came up with what I feel is a better representation of what my company is moving towards, which is a much more understated look compared to my past vehicles.

Here is a rough draft:

People along side you should have their eyes in front, driving, not taking your phone number down while beside you. Maybe get a magnetic sign and put it on the trunk lid, or on a perforated screen matte, silk screened, over the rear window?

Rear Window Graphics, Rear Glass Graphics Get Noticed - Signazon

What else would be cool would be printed up magnetic business card sized signs that could be peeled off when someone wants your business card to stick on their refrigerator. Or in some kind of dispenser.

Just me, but I consider it an unwritten rule to put anything on paint or metal on a german car... glass, however, is OK... if you must.

I accept consulting fees... ;)

IMHO the first design was better if you are going to paint or wrap. Bigger phone number always better.

If you go just magnetic, I guess the second is OK.

Agree with Niner, best place is probably on the rear window.

No magnet. Companies in my industry that are"storm chasers" hire hundreds of "salesman" each summer and they simply slap a magnet on whatever car they happen to own. They go door to door and play the "numbers game" after a storm hits an area.

This is not my business - I work referrals only and partner directly with insurance companies. It is important to my customers that I look permanent and professional.

Decals (or top paint) that have been professionally applied lends the impression that you've been doing this long enough to invest in "semi permanent" brand identification on a company vehicle.

I am picking up the TREG today!!

Next week I will settle in on a logo and lettering design. I have never tried the type on the glass - I always thought that it might interfer with visibility from the inside but apparently not?
