hey all. just looking at maybe getting a touareg for something differant. Was looking at FJ cruisers prado's pathfinders and pajero's.

I drive patrols and land cruisers for work and still want to travel away but want more comfort and luxury without limitation of where i can go

First of all im looking at spending about 40K and must be a diesel. Have they all got a proper low range box and what do i have to look out for? im looking at some semi serious off road work with it (simpson desert and googs track etc so need the low range.

on car sales they all seem to be 4XMOTION which im led to believe is the proper low range box. is the dial on the right next to the gear lever for the low range and the one on the left for the air suspension?

any help and advice would be great.

cheers

matt

The T1 and T2 are all 4XMotion (T3 came to Australia mid 2011) and they are low range and have centre diff lock.

Scroll down in the Australian section and you will see many have done the CSR and Simpson - plans are afoot for a cape York trip this year.

$40k should get you a good T2 V6 TDI just be patient (it is a good time to purchase a T2). You are correct about the dials but I don't think they all come with air suspension. Another thing to consider is to put on a set of decent ATR tyres maybe a little bigger than normal size (make sure you have a fifth spare the same size).

This one is good buying - 2008 VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG V6 4XMOTION 7L MY09 SUV Private Cars For Sale in QLD - carsales.com.au

This is 5K to dear for the km's it has on the clock, so there should be some good bargaining room. It is a dealer car and they are always overpriced. I reckon you could get it for 40k if you do your research, specifically quoting REDBOOK values etc. It is fully specced and got heaps of extras too - 2009 VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG V6 4XMOTION 7L MY09 SUV Private Cars For Sale in VIC - carsales.com.au

This one is 5K overpriced too. And has Air Suspension - 2008 VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG V6 4XMOTION 7L MY09 SUV Private Cars For Sale in ACT - carsales.com.au

This is what REDBOOK says about the above model. It is a dealer car so should still be room to move downwards too..... end of the day, a car is only worth what you will pay for it.

* Private Price Guide $40,800 - $45,100
* Trade In Price Guide $34,500 - $38,800
* Average Km 80,000 - 130,000

cheers for that. wont be buying for a few months as yet, just doing research and seeing if ill head in this direction.

what is the max size tyre you can run on the 17inch? im used to using either desert dueller LT or wrangler ATZ so would like to fit them on if possible.

also is there room under the bonnet for second battery to run fridge?

Plenty of room under the "space saver" spare wheel in the rear. (no room under the bonnet that I am aware of)

Once you remove the boot (luggage area) "privacy" blind holder/s you will have enough room to have a full size 17" wheel with tyre standing up (to one side).

Heaps of info here about installing a 2nd battery...just search the Aus/NZ section, some good installs completed.

What part of Oz are you in?

Oh yeah...welcome. No turning back now. ;)

Do a search for 17" tyres for a TDI. Second battery fits under the spare tyre in the boot Search for a thread by BOBZED57 he did it from memory.

Have you got deep, DEEP pockets for V10 repairs?

It's a SUPERCAR with super bills if it goes tits up.

wont have a big van at most will be off road camper. are the standard features on the V10 (air suspension and rear air con) really much of an advantage?
G'day
Well the suspension certainly is an advantage IMO
Um, I've had mine for 4 and a bit years, 150k kliks, and touch wood, none of the problems cited as commonplace.
True I did have a transfer case grind some bearings to bits but I think I know the cause of that.
I do use it off road.
I tow mates' vans and boats from time to time.
I've replaced one set of rotors and pads at 95k kliks.
And I broke a mirror because I was distracted while reversing.
I'm expecting another 4 years and similar mileage.
Regards
Kevin

not huge. are the prone to problems or just for the unlucky?? i am after something reliable and plan to keep for quite a few years
VW is no longer a bullet proof brand.

Get a good warranty, especially on a V10.
