Hi,

I took delivery on my 2012 Touareg TDI Lux this past Friday.
There is no included NavTeq DVD yet there was one on my 2010 TDI Jetta.

How does one determine if they have current updates?
Any thoughts on why VW seems to have changed how they deliver Navigation?

Thanks!

Jeff

I went to Navteq's site which you then go to the VW site and they said mine was up to date. Bought in May 2012.

I did not get a disk for mine.

My disks for my Infiniti were 199.00 for my 2011. Paid the same for my Ram 3500. Navteq refunded my money after complaining about the update on the Ram.

In hind site it was a total waste of money. Many people suggest waiting 2 years before updating the GPS.

I'm not in the vehicle long enough to warrant that kind of technology.

What really frosts the deal is you can buy a better portable unit for that kind of money and have life time map updates for free!

I have "Copilot Live" on my large Galaxy Note running Android. It really seems better and more up to date than NavTeq.

But the interface compared to the RNS810(?) is not nearly as useful, especially in traffic.
And perhaps user interface is a huge part of usability.

I'd heard similarly from mu Jetta salesperson a few years ago. Wait two years. The maps apparently do not change much.

My personal opinion of the "Indash GPS" unit is they all suck! Period!

Very cumbersome to use too! The worst was the one in my Ram 3500. The maze in which you have to go through to enter a destination. Heaven help if it required another state then which you were currently in. The Ram had built in Wi-Fi and I used my iPad.

I've had three vehicles now with the in dash set up. I can honestly say I’m not impressed with any of them. The VW belongs to the wife.

Call me old school, but the windshield mounted ones are easily transferred from one vehicle to another. My wife is fighting that now. All her address’ are in the VW and she’s gone fleet now. They were beta testing the mileage usage, but have since mandated 100% fleet usage now. She’s been bucking for an iPhone. May be now is the right time to switch it over?

My kids use their iPhones for this. I’m still on Blackberry soon to switch over to iPhone.

I say save your money on buying updates period!

I have a 2013 Touareg TDI Lux. The NAV is so out of date it does not have freeways that were opened in 2010. I was promised an update when they come out. They called and said they had it. Had to leave the vehicle overnight for the long download if you can imagine. They did give me a loaner. Next day picked up hoping for the best. No change. I don't think NavTeq has done an update since they were bought along with Nokia by Microsoft. They are the worthless stepchild and not getting any support. If anyone starts a class action suit I am in.

I've gone with the window mounted unit that comes with lifetime map updates. My wife went to a fleet vehicle after the VW debacle, which she is now on her 4th unit because of mileage she piles on. She prefers the Ford Edge. So I bought the Pana Vise mount that mounts between the radio and the dash plastic vs. being stuck to the windshield. Looks great. And the best part is you can just snap the GPS off the mount and use it elsewhere.

I'm not sure what's happening with all the new streets that have been added through the LTM updates as they don't always show up within the updates. Some do and some don't. Mostly don't. Like you if I had paid for that dash unit update, I'd have steam coming from my ears. The updates for these in-dash systems are very expensive. I'm not sure how VW does it's updates. We only had it a short time before we lemoned it. Our Infiniti and Lexus are both customer updateable but the updates are in the 250 buck range. Just my own personal perception is many people don't fool with the in dash updates.

They have updates for your Navigation System, but it is not free to download at the dealer – they sell it for ridiculously high price:
Volkswagen National eStore

I am not paying $343 for a few insignificant map changes. When I am travelling far and to unknown parts I always bring my wife’s Garmin GPS. This simple unit has lifetime map updates and the whole thing was $100 cheaper than RNS-850 map update.

ConservativeConsumer, I've gone the Garmin way too! I don't remember what I paid, but I've updated it several times from Costco. It was a frog hair over a hundred bucks I think. I did not want to spend an arm and a leg on it, if it got lifted from the car I would not be so wrapped around the axle about it. I've used it on several trips and it's worked great. A few of the new streets are not on it if I travel through the neighboring county. I don't drive as much as my wife does so it's no heart burn for me.

What annoys me about VW navigation is that the directions offered by the “Frau” are often against decent route logic and sometimes are downright dangerous. For example, it never gives me good route options to MN North-West Angle, Kenora or Lac Seul areas – no matter what route preferences I am selecting on the unit. I’ve been in situations when “the Frau” insisted that I should drive through forest roads in mid-winter to get to my destinations in South Ontario and South Manitoba mentioned above. Turning at night to a road that is really no-road is no fun at all and with a nearest town 15-20 miles away only Touareg off-road capabilities saved my butt on a couple of occasions.

I had that happen several times in my Ram 3500. I'm like of crap where is it taking me. The road got narrower and narrower and finally gravel road. Also when in DC the not so nice neighborhoods.

I see the Navteq car all the time here in the DC metro area, Google and Bing too!

My wife says it makes you make right had turns too so you don't have to cross oncoming traffic.

The app on the iPhone is very crappy. The only thing nice about that is I can Bluetooth to the infotainment head and it pipes out over the car speakers.

I think if VW ever goes to Apple's CarPlay system it will solve the map issue. Audi is listed as offering Carplay currently. The Wife's 2010 Jetta maps are out of date and we're no paying +$200 for a map update that is free on her phone. Navteq has to realize their business model is rapidly coming to an end. Until them I guess just just plan to stiff customers for overpriced updates.

Poor routing is common with all OEM NAVs with NavTeq software. Dirt roads, locked gates, and longer routes. As for wanting an Apple mapping system. I thought they had a lot of problems and went back to google maps? Looks like Audi will offer both in their vehicles. I would much rather go with Android and Google maps.

As well as supporting Apple's in-car system, Audi also has a foot in the Google-led Open Automotive Alliance. Other car manufacturers supporting both Apple and Google systems include Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Subaru, Suzuki, and Volvo.

Looks like we may get more options in the future. I know this is the last vehicle I buy with NavTeq mapping.

It looks like both CarPlay and Google Auto are in their final stages. I am excited to see if VW offers any kind of Infotainment upgrade to the existing system. Here are both demonstrated in the new Hyundai that seems to be on the leading edge of NAV technology.

I have been so pleased with the nav system in my 2013. I caught a mistake the other day when it didn't know the speed limit had dropped on a stretch of highway, but I think that may have been the first error I've seen it make. There are so many other crappy systems out there (my other car's is so bad as to be unusable!) that I have never had complaint with VW in that area.

I've got a Mercedes C300 Sedan for my fleet car. Just picked it up Tuesday afternoon. Not by choice but was told black on black. I had no choice in the section process. Ugh trying to keep that clean. Getting to my point. They cover the first three years of updates. I'm sure that's all rolled into the pricing, as nothing is FREE!! It's on the window sticker too. The screen looks identical to the VW interface. You have to use the knob to enter all the info. The screen is NOT touch screen. I'm like WTF? mBrace and Lojack installed too. The guy that set it up before I left said you can have the mBrace send the info to the GPS via your iPhone, I'm guessing someone is going to be watching me big time? Also it displays the speed limit like you said in the bottom right corner, except I've noted that in some places it does not as the speed limit changes to fast for the system to pick up. Maybe I should not rely on that as the gospel and watch for the signs instead.
