Just wanted a few words of advice for a set of tires. I found a local set of 17 inch Cayenne rims for a deal and bought them. I know the wonders of winter tires. I have dunlop winter sport 3d's on my gti and they are awesome. However, the touareg has 4wd and was considering just getting all terrains. Goodyear silent armor, michelin A/t ms2, ...considering many more. I have had pickups with all terrains and they did pretty well in snow. But I know winter tires are that much better for braking and traction. I am not offroading-Atleast not in any serious form, no rock crawling/mudding. Some beach driving, some light trails. This would be a second set of tires. I plan on keeping my 19 's for the summer.
Thank you for advice ahead of time.

If you have serious winters use winter tyres - you already know what they can do and they are very much better that ATs when it comes to stopping! I know - I have both!!

Not in the UK's current summer temperatures!!

We presently have hosepipe bans because the reservoirs didn't get enough rain water to replenish them in the winter and the last 6 weeks it has rained non-stop such that we now have floods!

Check out the nokian WRG2 SUV line of winter ( legal snowflake marked) rated all seasons. I have a set on 17s and am really impressed. I understand they are not as good at extreme low temps but for rain and slush they are awesome. They have a 500 tread water rating too!

Thank you for the input. I was pretty set on winters, but some co-workers tried to convince me that A/T is more than adequate. Here on long island, I could get away without them, but my fwd car was nearly unstoppable with winter tires when we had that bad winter in 2010-11. So I would like to see what a treg can do with some blizzaks or similar.

I'm running stock size 235/65r17 wrg2s, I like a narrower snow tire and with them there is tons of room for running 5.5mm LT diamond back snow chains on all corners. Unstoppable!

Stopping is a matter friction coefficient. If your friction coefficient is 0, 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive absolutely don't matter. Any number multiplied by 0 is...?
The purpose of a true winter tyre is to create grip where others can't so whilst your mathematics are correct, the implication is not.

I just wish they made something a little more aggressive in a 19 inch tire for 3 seasons. If I go with strictly winters (which I prob will), I am left with what is essentially a car tire for the rest of the year. I don't need to be moab capable, but don't want to puncture a tire going down a gravel driveway (slight exaggeration). I guess you can't have everything, and I understand the more agressive I go, the worse the driving dynamics will be. Scorpion ATRs come in 255/55 19 which would fit, but are a little narrow.

The Touareg is a highly capable car so you don't need too aggressive a tread. I ran mine on General Grabber UHPs as did the UK VW demo team and these coped with with mud, gravel tracks, steep wet grass and even snow [ and my car is off raod every day by the way] anmd I never used low ratio or locked the diff.

I now use Vredestein Wintrac 4 Google Image Result for http://lovetyres.com/public/tyre/Vredestein-Wintrac-4-Xtreme-2.jpg

and General Grabber ATs [not AT2s]

I actually took my touareg north as soon as I got it for a trial run. It went through mud no problem with my conti 4x4 contacts, but they felt like slicks. Didn't get stuck, but felt inadequate. That's all I'm saying. I know these rigs are insane. I've seen what you guys have done with them. I thank you again for input and advice.

You only have to look at the Contact to realise it could even let you down on wet grass!

It is a totally road biased tyre with no angular tread blocks for a bit of off road grip.

The only thing that saved you were the Touareg's electronics!

Only if you don't have extremely low temperatures as another member in Alaska found out: they have changed the compound and he found he was driving square wheels after a very chilly night!

But he was happy with the Hakkapelittas that Nokian replaced them WRs with.

So basically, I could just go with silent armors and be in better shape, being that the WRG2's are similarly rated, but don't have any offroad ability. If I could kill two birds with one stone, that would be great. We usually don't have much ice here in ny and the highways get cleaned pretty fast. I would love 3 sets of tires! Just not a reality. I'm sure Goodyear silent armors in 255/65r17 will be better than worn down conti's in a 275/45r19.

Good tread - just won't stop as quick as a winter tyre in certain conditions.

As long as you remember that . . . !
