anyone from VA know if you are charged a luxury tax for Touaregs? I know in fairfax county we are charged a "personal property tax"
I cant seem to find any detailed information online, all I could find was someone stating they believe it is $55,000 and up was charged but I dont know the percentage.kaboom

I just don't remember paying that much on my first touareg. I will have to act stupid when the bill comes otherwise the wife will shoot me

UT was the same way, you got assessed a property tax rather then a flat registration rate. I was paying over $200 each year to register my TDI when I lived there and now back here in PA it is a flat rate and I don't have to emissions test it anymore since PA does not do emissions on diesels.. :)

That's why fairfax is the richest county in the us......
And Loudon is getting there. It had the highest average household income in the country in 2010 or 2011, can't remember.

But now that IO have moved to NC, I know what high taxes really are. VA is so much cheaper from a tax standpoint. Even my damn auto insurance went up.

Breakdown of VA Property Tax

I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but VA Personal Property Tax is a YEARLY ordeal and is based on the estimated value of your vehicle. They use a service similar to KBB, although I can't remember what it is. This sounds similar to the CT tax, although it seems like VA's is higher.

Here's the breakdown for anyone in VA:

value of vehicle:
$0 - $3000 :: no tax (it's actually 5% with a 100% 'credit)
$3000 - $20000 :: 3.5% (it's actually 5% tax with a 30% 'credit')
> $20000 :: 5% tax

Thus, if they value a new Treg at $50,000, the yearly tax bill will be $2,095, on top of the initial sales tax paid and any other DMV requirements (emissions, safety inspection, county-based stickers, registration, etc), but it will go down each year, but will never go away unless the car's value falls under $3000.

Example: my 1997 Jeep Wrangler is still valued around $3,800 according to state, so it's yearly property tax is $30.

Edit: forgot to mention, if you don't own the car for the full year in VA, then they do pro-rate the remainder of the year.

yes VA will "pro-rate" thru the end of the year... to me it doesn't seem fair.. back home in NC you get billed once a year. but its only after the first full year of ownership so from jan-dec you get your bill in dec... my current case in VA i bought my Touareg May 31st they sent me a bill for June- Dec 31 in november to me they should have only billed me for June-Nov considering Dec hadn't happened yet...

I'm not looking forward to that 2k bill in October, but then again I get to drive around in a Touareg:)

Plus some of what you can be written off on your taxes it's not much but better than nothing assuming you itemize.

That's a lot of dough.

I assume it's not possible to keep your car registered in a low tax state?
