2012 Touareg Owners With Pirelli Scorpion Verde Tires

Hello Touareg Owners!
We need some feed back on 2012 Pirelli Scorpion Verde 265/50r19 tires. We currently Have 9000 miles on the Turd. We really enjoy her but we have had two flats since picking her up. Jason has noted the tires don't seem to be wearing like we are used to. He believes in rotating and hand torquing all our cars so this is not our first rodeo. Please help!

FWIW my experience with 19" tires sucked. After spending $300.00 per tire for two sets and getting maybe 20K out of them I put 18" wheels on. Now I get 40K + for $200.00 per tire.

Well We are beginning to think you are right! I have never had this much bad luck and wear with a set of tires. We are going to run them as long as we can and then change them. I am glad to see we are not alone. Thanks

For 9,000 miles of wear, how many 1/32 nds of tread have been consumed? Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels indicates the OE Pirelli Scorpion Verde starts off with 11/32nds. For its admittedly "limited" OE applications (our low production rate Touareg's), they show it as one of the sterling performers.

In contrast, I have 1200 miles on a much lower rated (rated 25th in same category) GY LS 2, albeit 18 in 255/55, 109 H. The best I can figure is it starts off with 10/32nd and has posted ZERO consumption (still 10/32 nds). I did go through a very gentle 500 miles tire break in cycle.

The Verdes have the virtue of being smooth and quiet for on-road use. Don't know how they're going to wear on my new Treg. I always figure OEM tires are a compromise, chosen to make the vehicle test drive as nice as possible, while being "appropriate" for intended (expected) uses of the vehicle they're installed on. I'd guess the wear characteristics are probably the last priority.

From memory, the wear rating is like 9.4/10 for superior. Even the overall #1 rated tire is rated 9.1/10. Again in contrast, it is 5.3/10 for the GY LS2's, in the good category. So for those getting the Verdes, the tire is ranked #2 over all with the tread wear ratings being the highest.

I have about 6200 miles on my Pirellis and the fronts were cupping badly on outside edges. Took it to a local alignmenet shop and the alignmnet is within spec. So I just rotated for now. Any one else experiencing cupping?

After 26K miles on my Pirellis had abnormal wear on both the inside and outside ribs, but I would not call it cupping. I think cross rotating as opposed to just front to rear (as VW recommends) would alleviate this wear pattern.

Yes, major cupping at 25k miles and car was unstable..

At that point I changed them out for Goodyear Eagle LS-2's which seem to be doing well.. Now at 35k miles..

Never had a flat in the 35k miles either with pirelli or current tires, however.

Funny...i had the LS2s that came stock on my Executive changed out for Pirelli Scorpion Verdes. I did this in part because LS2s had terrible reviews and the Verdes had very high ratings from users on Tire Rack and others various searches.

No complaints with the Verdes, however, I only have 1500 miles on them since I used my winter tires for a few months after purchasing my Treg.

I'm wondering how everyone's tires are doing now. My 2011 tdi lux came with the Pirelli's. I'm just below 20,000 and the tread is really worn down at this point. I'll likely need to get a new set in the next month or so. The service guy at the dealership claimed that he doesn't normally see touaregs get more than 25k miles on a set of tires... and claimed it wasn't just the pirellis while saying the touareg is a really heavy vehicle. I will likely get a different set even if he is correct, the pirellis seem loud to me... though they are the only think I've had on the treg at this point. I'd be curious to know what kind of life you are getting out of your tires now.

I am very disappointed in the performance of the Scorpion Verdes. We have rotated the tires twice and still have issues with cupping and road noise. The car has 20,000 miles and we are having to replace the tires. We began having issues a little over 10,000 miles with normal driving conditions. I complained to the dealership and Pirelli and get the same response "the car is set up to be aggressive" and the tires have minimum life. Pirelli states they are 60,000 mile tires, but they will not last close to the length of time. I am tire searching now!

I have a 2012 with Pirelli Scorpion Verde 265/50r19 tires on its. I have only had the vehicle for 8 months and I have already put 20,580 miles on it and just found out today, that I need new tires, per my scheduled VW maintenance.

This is so frustrating! It seems like VW needs to put appropriate tires on a heavy SUV vehicle. Price has nothing to do with value. The tires have a 600 Tread Wear rating. It's not the tires as much as it’s the German Engineering, or lack thereof.

This is my first and maybe last VW. I love the vehicle, its fits me perfectly as I am tall and drive a lot. However I need to get more than 20,000 miles out of a set of tires. If I wanted poor value I would have purchased a Buick Enclave.

It would seem for the 18 in size the GY LS2's seem to have the edge over the 19 in and 20 in options. The Pirell Scorpion Verde A/S are better rated (tire rack also). They have higher UTQG (600 vs 400) and start with 1/32nd in more tread (11/32nds vs 10/32nds in).

I am coming up on 11,000 miles and the tires measures 9.3 /32nd in or app 14,000 miles per 1/32nd of wear. (starts with 10/32nd in). Wear is dead even across the width of the tread. Per oem owners manual I am running + 3 psi over recommended of 33 F/38 R or 36 F /41 R PSI.

This is interesting in that IF I had my druthers I would have chosen the Pirelli's. Indeed I am seriously considering the P S V A/S LX20's. for the next set. But given my current results, and other owners' feedback, I should also consider the GY LS2's again.

The up side is that for replacement Pirelli tires that do not live up to the 50,000 miles warranty (H rated), the next set will be prorated.
